He REALLY wants me there and I do also but the plane ticket is $900 with a $30 cab fee from the airport to the base and at first, there was no room on base for me and hubby cannot leave base but now there is room for me. So I reserved a room. His bunk mate offered to pay for my ticket but I feel wierd taking it. Hubby said bunk mate's fiance will call me with $ arrangements but hubby said if they flake out to NOT come becase we may have to purchase a ticket just for hubby to come home for Christmas, due to some sort of security lay over. Any opinions or advice?

Why have you not shopped for your ticket on the net & found a cheap one? Southwest Airlines seems to be the cheaper carrier these days. You don't HAVE to leave at 8am, you CAN leave at 4am in order to save a few hundred $$$$, IMO.

Try fare saver dot com, among others.

Good luck.

Bus or car would be a lot cheaper.

It would be nice if you could be there though.

It felt weird for me when I graduated from boot camp, I was the only one there that didn't have a family member there.

So if you can make it, go....

How about a virtual garage sale fund raiser?

I'll buy one round of the .223 you have for a $1
Just tell me where to send the money! And hurry!

BE SURE to tell us what fare you get shopping around. You might even start a separate thread asking one of the resident wizards to find you a cheap flight and THEN tell us how much it is. No telling what might happen.

Tried faresaver.com & got the same quote. Gonna try cheaptickets.com again to see if a red eye is cheaper.

I would love to but I can't take that much time off work to get there. I have to be there by the 2nd at night for family day on the 3rd and graduation is the 4th.

Got a friend (who wants to meet a newly minted soldier) who has a driver's license and a good driving record, to share a cross country roadtrip? One sleeps while the other drives, then trade off. No motels are needed (until you get there, nudge nudge, wink wink). And you'll have a car when you get there to get around.

Figure on 33 hours one way (2030 mi/60 mph)

Check the trains.  They may have a schedule that fits. Also try Expedia.com.  $900.00 is an awful lot for a plane ticket.  You could rent a car and drive, stay at a motel, etc. for a lot less.  Be very careful about letting someone else lend you the money for a ticket as there are those in the service that make a handy living loan sharking.

That's what I thought. Too bad I couldn't get a ticket in advance but it's not a good idea since he may not have graduated. Actually it's a good thing I didn't cuz they changed the grad dates anyway. I figure the price I got is as low as it gets. I want to be there for him and the event too. I am just so very proud of him and any others that do this.

Orbitz $696  12/2 - 12/5

But I'd recommend the train if you can not afford to fly.  It will take longer but being there is the world to him.

As he said tho if need be don't go.  But it's really upto you and you could make it up to him when he gets home.

You need to fly into Charlotte NC. Rent a car there. 1.5 hrs to Columbia from there. I bet you save 3-400 bucks that way. If you need any help while in Columbia, call on me. Columbia is notorious for high fares. The car should cost about what the cab does.

unwanted advice:

spend the money on a vacation together when he gets back. graduation from boot just isnt that big of a deal when its that much money. the $$ is better spent getting reaqquainted far from your family, kids, the army, and your jobs..... just my .02c

he cant see you in the crowd. you wont recognize him so just let him "turn to" and step off to the bus station and then you guys spend 4 days on a beach somewhere sipping margaritas and catching up

My son is at Shaw, about an hour away from Columbia.  Columbia is notoriously expensive airfare wise.  Charlotte, NC is a minor hub and is less than 2 hours away.  Charleston,SC is about 3 hours away, Atlanta, GA is about 4 hours away and if you can't find a cheap flight into Atlanta.  Savannah is about 4 hours away.

You ought to be able to find a good deal into one of them.  Rental Cars are about $40/day, see if there are any recruit graduation good deals through SATO (Scheduled Airlines Ticket Office, call your local base if any) most bases have them.

Ditto's on Atlanta.  It is a major east coast hub.  When we east coasters die we have to catch a connecting flight to our final destination in Atlanta.

I can tell you you can make Ft. Jackson from Atlanta in 3 hours easy.  I could regularly get to Columbia SC, (where my wife was) from Ft. Benning (where I graduated the Benning School for Boys) in a bit over 4 hours.

Travelocity has a rate of appx $350 from Phoenix to Charlotte on ATA. I did a search using Dec 3 departure and dec 6 return. Add a rental car and you are still under $500. Add a bus ticket instead of the rental car and you are closer to $400. Also, get a damn paypal account setup. Jesus, it's easy and you will never get the funds in time via US mail.

NINE HUNDRED BUCKS???

What are they doing, making a stopover in Paris on the way?

That's ABSURD!

Check some other airlines!  Really!

I can't believe there's not a much cheaper air fare for you.

Ever considered shipping yourself as air freight?  [BD]

Space A into Shaw is almost impossible. It's an F-16 base.  Charleston gets some.  Pope up at Fayetteville gets some.

Check the ATA website, my wife just got a $79 each way Los Angeles to Indianapolis a while back.

I just did a quick check on ATA leaving 12/02 Phoenix to Charlotte, returning 12/05 $390 and change.  The Phoenix to Charlotte was a red eye with change in Chicago but the return looked reasonable.
