Mostly just to piss people off.
But seriously. Who here has a 9mm 1911? Besides women and children of course, since 9mm is for pansies. I still like it and love handguns in 9mm. Any negatives? I like 9mm I like the 1911. It makes sense. |
|
Gonna go with the Para or the STI model? I think Kimber might make one as well.
|
|
I had a 9mm Colt Combat Commander and it was stupid. Nice gun but way too heavy for the capacity and power.
If you're going to have 9 rounds, get a small light pistol. If your going to carry a heavy gun, make it a .45.

I have Wilson Combat in 9mm and it is my favorite shooter by far. 1911 ergo's and accuracy plus less recoil.
|
|
I have a 9mm Commmander. Fun range gun. Handles nice, as a 1911 should and is relatively inexpensive to shoot. Just a fun gun though, not something I would consider for my carry peice.

Just buy a Star Model B. Then the ghost of JMB will not have to curse you or haunt your house. Or something.

Nothing wrong with a 9mm in a 1911, but I think you should take a look at a Hi Power if you really wanna go that way.

You could for go the 1911 and just get a Browning Hi-Power. This is sound advise. I found the grip to be perfect. But you're right OP... for folks with smaller hands (such as I) it's the ticket for pleasure shooting. I won't piss on the 9mm as a defensive load. Plenty of mine have died by it. If you shoot the 9mm better, there's the answer it'd seem. |
|
Only thing negative I have heard about 9mm 1911's is their reliability. I know someone is going to reply "I have shot a million rounds through mine without problem"
To me it is a cheater gun. Makes shooting too easy. |
|
Go STI for the double stack mag capacity, otherwise its kind of a waste of space to have the big grip and only have single stack 9mm in there...

I HAD a Combat Commander in 9mm... it did not shoot as well (subjective) as other 9mm pistols.
My only regret is that it was a Colt and matched 2 other pistols I had at the time. You won't piss anyone off, you'll just short change yourself. The 1911 platform is wasted on 9mm. 9mm is done better with Beretta, Glock, CZ, S&W, FNH, Browning, etc.. |

Disclaimer : I carry a full size 1911 in .45 -
I wanted a 1911 in 9mm for a long time, for cheaper practice / less expensive per round / less recoil / faster back on target / future competition etc...... Found a Springfield 1911 in 9mm this past spring for $750. stainless, ambi, magwell, bevertail, backstrap, and a few wilson mags w/ it. pretty good deal all together. This one won't load some LRN reloads, but LOVES FMJ. And accuracy is outstanding. Over all, I am very happy with it. let me see if I can find a link to a 9mm 1911 pic thread.......... edit. Hasn't been posted in for more than 30 days / didn't come up in the search..... thread was something like, "9mm 1911 blastphemy?" or something close. |

Funny the Star Model B came up. My father owns the Model BM and its actually a great shooter!
As far as advice on a 1911 in 9mm...time to beat a dead horse. Too big and heavy for what you get. Browning Hi Power all the way! |
|
Look at the Springfield EMP. It's actually a scaled down frame designed specifically for 9mm and .40.

Does anyone make extended single stack magazines for non .45 ACP 1911's? Something like the Wilson or McCormick 10 rounders but with 12-15 9mm, 9x23 or .38 Super? Would work for 10mm too.

I am about to go this route as well. Why? Because 9mm is so much cheaper to shoot and I'm tired of just staring at my guns cause I can't afford to shoot them regularly.

Do it. I have never met anyone who doesn't absolutely love the things. It is one of my favorites to shoot.

Half the cost to shoot. Same ergonomics as it's big brother. Rock Island has them going for under 500.00 bucks. Great for training and carrying. Like they say, get both.

I have one in 9mm (STI) and it's a hell of a shooter. Balance is great, recoil is almost non-existent, feeds every form of FMJ round you could want with Wilson magazines,
As far as JHP ammo I haven't had the best of luck but it's a game gun for me so it doesn't matter to me. I have plenty of other handguns that are defensive and feed anything you can put in the magazine. The selling point for me was price. I shoot several hundred rounds a week and it's just sooooo much cheaper to do it with a 9mm 1911 vs a .45 1911. Handloads or not, you can buy WWB for 20 a 100 at wallyworld or load them at 11 a 100, you can't beat that price. |
|
One of the guys I shoot with has a 9mm Wilson Combat, smooth as a sewing machine.
|
|
I'm selling my .45 1911 to fund buying a 9mm. I hardly ever shoot the .45 because I'm not set up to reload for it and factory ammo is pretty expensive. I've heard the key to reliability in a 9mm is finding the mags that your gun likes.

|
Fail. That's like asying "I'm thinking about getting a Stingray with an automatic transmission," or "I think I want to fuck a hooker with a set of balls."

I have a Series 70 that has the full-size slide/barrel, Commander-size slide/barrel, 9mm slide/barrel and .22LR slide/barrel all in a set for it. Does that count?

Is 9mm easier to suppress because as a supersonic round it generates a crack, or because the subsonic .45acp does not?

I've got one. Unless you're planning to use it in USPSA single stack classs. I'd buy a hi-cap 9mm if I lived in your state. Me, I live in a 10rd state

Quoted: 9mms are also easier to suppress. This will be mjohn in a few months: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg242/stockshift/Movie%20Images/Hitman/Hitman6Large.jpg Oh hell yes! I have two 9mm cans, but neither has a booster so it would probably not cycle. |
