How is the ammo for your weapons supplied in the field?
Is it already packed in mags or do you guys load mags when your not being shot at?

Ammo come in bandoleers in stripper clips for 5.56

There was a trial of preloaded magazines back about 20 or so years ago... some may remember the "zipper" wind up mags? But the general answer is, ammo in bulk... load your own.

Most of the time ammo was packed in an ammo can in 20 round boxes.

Yep, which sucks because you have to remove them all to get your 5-1 tracers going.
Three tracers on the bottom, 5-1 first round tracer.
Half mags like that, one mag all ball, 2 mags all tracer.

Ammo comes packed in wooden crates, inside the crates are metal ammo cans, which inside the cans is the ammo packed either in boxes (pistol ammo ie, 38, 9mm, 45; rifle ammo 7.62 Match, 5.56 tracer, blanks etc), on stripper clips (5.56, 7.62) inside bandoleers or belted (5.56, 7.62 or .50 cal). The only magazines that are loaded are for the 200 rd belts in a so called plastic box (magazine) for the M249 SAW.

I never saw ammo in stripper clips except a few times during training.

All I've ever gotten in 20 rd boxes was blanks.

Maybe it's changed, but back in the late 80s, early 90s, in the National Guard, ROTC, IOBC and with the 25th Infantry Division, we got our live ammo AND our blanks in 20 round boxes. The only difference was that the live ammo came in stripper clips IN the boxes.

With regard to 5.56 ball, it has always (in my experience) been wood crate-steel ammo can-cloth bandoleer-stripper clip, with, of course, one clip guide and one large safety pin per bandoleer.

GI ball ammo is a little bit over packaged, IMHO.
