Once I got my hands on it, I was sorely dissapointed. The integrated sights are a joke in this day and age of Aimpoints, TR24s, S&B/Nightforce scopes, etc. Still, I was able to figure out how to completely field strip within minutes of handling it. Takes just 3 pins, and the design is quite elegant. 
I shot a local tactical rifle match up here in WA a few weeks back. A local metro area SWAT team got squadded up with my friends and I, good times. H&K seems to have also realized that the AR platform, being "open source", is the way to go.

Crack open the trigger group of the G36 some time. That thing is WAY overengineered. The little pin that extends down into the pistol grip made me laugh. I'm still wondering what the hell it's for... I figure that just about half the crap in that fire control group could be eliminated with no ill effects. I removed that shitty scope/carryhandle and replaced it with the SL8's rail and irons. That scope is a total P.O.S. Hensoldt can lick nuts for that abortion. |

I still wish someone with deep pockets would buy/license the G-36 design and produce it here. It should be cheap to produce and it would have that teutonic aura. I would replace the various optics rails/sight combo thing with a full length rail closely mounted to the receiver over the charging handle.

I'd prefer a quality AR-15 over a G-36, mostly for the ease of adding accessories and optics, and reduced logistical strain since good magazines and spare parts for the AR-15 are a dime a dozen. Ergonomics and reliability are great too. Thing is about reliability is that you gotta find out for yourself what works. I've found that the AR-15 platform is quite reliable over the course of shooting ~30K rounds in the last 5 years, 20 of which I reloaded. Reliable, accurate, ergonomic (even more so after slapping on a BAD Lever and BCM Gunfighter) easy to maintain... Quoted:

I actually expected that scope to rock considering that it's not only an H&K product (Yes I was drinking the Kool-Aid) but Hensoldt glass! I was very disappointed with that scope, and while it *LOOKS* cool as hell with that carrying handle on it, the long iron sight setup off the SL8 is actually superior. I far prefer the AR, especially a high quality one to the G36. That doesn't mean that the G36 is a safe queen though, I love taking it to the range and having every CoD twelve year old shoot it, then say that they prefer the AR, XCR, M14 or Sig556. Speaking of that rail, I'm at a loss as to what H&K was thinking with that too. They've got mounting slots on there, but if you put a scope with extra low rings/bases, an EOTech or an Aimpoint the damn thing is too high to get a good cheekweld. even with the riser. Might just be my face... And don't get me started on those non captured pins... What's with this Dave_A terror? |

Pre-ban semi-auto Galil. Very interesting weapon. I liked how they managed to link up the AK style safety to a western style thumb safety on the left side of the receiver, above the pistol grip.
