On a bitter cold day last week, a neighbor asked me to take a possum out of her barn. It was a small, half-frozen thing. I think it's going to lose an ear, but otherwise it's making a remarkable recovery and has become quite tame.

On the upside, possums don't carry rabies. So he's got that going for him, which is nice.

i've heard they carry heroin and crack addiction. Addiction is a disease, you know.

No way is OP married. I can imagine my wife drowning a possum in scalding hot water if she came home and found I had a possum in the tub.

Does the possum look like this?

They can, but rare. For some unknown reason, they are highly resistant to it. Skunks, coyotes, raccoons and other animals can practically get it just by looking at another infected animal. (Sarcasm).
They are so ugly, I think the almighty one felt sorry and gave them a strong life and high resistance to rabies.
I have see them get run over and keep walking.

Pics of said opossum.

I think they're pretty cool much like coon's are the only difference is the opossum has a face only a mother can love.

Fascinating 'possum facts:

They are the only marsupial in North America.

Their body temperature is too low to support the rabies virus.

A female has 13 nipples, arranged in a circle with one in the middle.

On Sapelo Island, five miles off the coast of Georgia, a population of 'possums has been isolated for thousands of years. They have evolved lifespans 50% longer than those of mainland populations.

I took some pics, but they didn't turn out well enough to post. Pretty much just a dimly-lit one-eared possum in a bathtub. I'll try again when the wife gets home and can handle the camera while I hold Blossom the Possum in better light.

They are a might greasy....Sorta like coon but the meat is much more delicate.

Okay, but chopsticks?

I've cared for cages full of them. If they had their eyes open, we would just put food on a paper plate and they would all gravitate to their favorite things; fruit, yogurt, mealworms, crickets, catfood etc. When the cage needed cleaning, which was often , if you picked one up, you got most of them. We called them possum balls. They were actually very entertaining to watch.

They only snap if they feel threatened. It didn't hurt... much.

I usually worked with raptors that had been injured. But baby season is baby season. We had baby birds, opossums, squirrels etc. Exhausting little things.

As none of us wanted the rabies vaccine, we didn't work with coons, flying squirrels, bats or any of the other rabies vector species.

No, no, no... you've got it all wrong. Wife holds Blossom, and you hold the camera.

I grew up watching Grizzly Adams and he always fed his bear flapjacks. I guess if you can feed them to a bear, they're probably good enough for a possum.

Good call.

If it has nipples, it can have rabies.

Not kidding, that is a real rule.

It's just very uncommon with possums.

I know a lady that rescued the only live one after a pregnant momma got ran over and the babies came out. She raised it from a little baby and spoiled the crap out of it. Turned out to be a good pet. Slept all day under some blankets but would roam around at night and hiss at her husband anytime he got to close to his wife, lol. He was very protective over his new Mom. Of course the husband said he hated the thing but I'm pretty sure he liked him too.

They are also resistant to levels of poison that will kill 50 raccoons. I think they get a buzz off of it.

MY mom had a baby one in her utility room years ago. I went in and grabbed it. I will never forget the look of horror on my Mother's face when I picked it up. It still makes me laugh. I have one that likes to eat cat food outside. I can walk right by it without it even getting concerned.

That's good of you to do that. When he's recovered let him go.. unless you're planning on keeping him for a pet. You don't want him to get so dependent on you that he loses the survival angle. Just a thought.

Small possums are sort of cute. They get ugly and nasty as they get older. It will calm down pretty quick. Giving it a bath is the first thing you will want to do after it lets you touch it.

They can get along with other pets.

They will climb on and destroy any type of bird feeder you have though.

They can be fed treats similar to a dog.

I still have all my fingers and have not been bitten...yet.

People need to understand that opossums are very clean animals. They constantly clean themselves, and hate being lose to their feces. They were one of the easiest animals I have house trained. Very affectionate, very docile animals.
