I was activated with my reserve unit, first on Sept 11th fow a few days at ground zero, then on 15Jan for a year at Camp Lejeune. We got released a month early and I'm home now. My wife is 3 months pregnant( I had LEAVE in october wiseguys)after 7 years of trying, 8 miscarriages, one pregnancy which had to be ended or she would have died(almost ruptured her uterus),2 egg harvests and 4 tries at invitro fertilization. This time she wasn't even doing any meds for fertility or anything, finally just damn lucky I guess.

My wife's doctor called today and told us she's a cystic fibrosis carrier, and I have to be tested today. Evidently it's pretty common in caucasions of northerneastern eurpoean descent and my wife is FREAKING out, me too.

I have to wait 7-10 days for the results and I'm really going nuts right now.

I wish you well. Just keep in mind that the CF gene is relatively rare and that your chances of carrying it are small, and that the chances that your child will have two copies of it are even smaller. Try not to dwell on the less likley scenarios. This must be doubly hard given your uncertain military status. Keep your chin up.

I watched a medical show the other day that showed that a lady was carrying a baby with CF. The Doctors did an operation while the baby was still in her womb and said it was sucessful.

I think a lot of us have been through similar; MDs ethically required to inform you/scare the shit out of you. I can tell you this about CF: it's quite manageable now, for whatever small consolation that gives you at a time like this. I know, like most prospective new parents, you want a perfect child, and my prayer for you and your wife is just that, as well as the strength t deal with this time of trial and not knowing. Let us know.

With both my two boys, birth defects were always a big concern for me. I spend many a night praying. I'm not sure why I was so scared, just a normal reaction I guess. Don't get too worked up before you find out the results of the tests. Hang in there.

Thanks for you word and thoughts. I really appreciate it. I got back from the lab a little while ago and now we have to wait 7-10 days. My wife's been through so much, and now to have this hanging over her head just kills me. I've been doing alot of reading and web surfing on the subject and I'm still really nervous. 1 out of 29 are carriers of those that are of eastern european descent from what I've read so far. If I'm a carrier then it's a one in four chance that our offspring will have the disease. Evidently it's pretty common to be a carrier. The odds of carriers hooking up are 1 in 841. I think I may sound a bit like C3PO but so much bum fortune has hit us in the past several years that it just wouldn't surprise me for one more kick in the teeth.

It's not that things all over are bad it's just this one area of our lives. I've got a house, food, a job with a paycheck, and a wife and a 10 month old baby we adopted in February. I have a good perspective on all this and I've put it in it's place. I just hope it isn't the case.

Well, I wish you both the best. My fiance had a rough time with our first. He was 10 weeks early and spent 59 days in intensive care. He's doing great now, but it was a rough road. God Bless.

I will light a candle for you. I have an Aunt that has 2 CF boys. A 2 year old and a 5 month old. Her and her husband are carriers. The children had to be operated on to remove part of the intestine ( I think ) and they have to take medicine to suplement thier enzymes. If they are operated on young enough it will not go into the lungs in most cases. Other than that they are normal kids. They are active and very smart. Well for a 2 year old and a grub anyway. The doctors they have are also telling them that in 10 years there may not be that much of a problem for their children if research continues.

You are on our Church prayer list now...the intercessory prayer group at Church prays every morning from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m.. These wonderful people are faithful and pray fervently for all kinds of needs.

God does care about our lives, and I believe he answers prayer.
