Yep, I was the meat in the middle of a 5 way this morning. Heavy traffic. Car #1 - older Honda Accord Car #2 - Ford Taurus Wagon Car #3 - my 1993 325I Car #4 - Lexus RC300 SUV Car #5 - older Toyota Camry Car #1 & #2 stop suddenly, I (#3) stop, but #4 & #5 don't. I get hit HARD, driving me into #2 and #2 into #1. All cars but mine are drivable. Car #5 is the worst of them, with a bit of crumpled hood. My 325I is totalled. Front crushed in, radiator wasted. Hood, right front fender, trunk, rear quarters, some interior trim, etc.... I don't think my car performed worse, I just think I took the worst of the hits. The SUV probably went over my rear bumper, and with having just braked heavily and still having the brakes applied, my front end probably dove under the bumper of the Taurus. Neither scenerio is good for the car. Cars #4 & #5 got tickets for failure to stop. They are fighting over whether #4 actually stopped or not. (must have, there is NO WAY that Camry drove the SUV into me and the front 2 cars) RIP. 1993-2002

Thanks, it was. The fun part is going to be the $1400 wheels & $2300 stereo system. I hope I don't get too cornholed by the insurance company. The funny part? It happened about 2 miles from the house I just sold in Maryland last month. Part of why I sold and moved to Pennsylvania was all the damned traffic!

Similar thing happened to me... I was at a stop in my '86 Integra (this was back in 1994) at a light behind about 8 cars. I had just made a U turn to go back toward my highschool, and saw a sheriff pull over some idiot who was riding in the passenger seat, with his baby on his lap. His wife was driving I guess. I make the U and stop at the light in the middle lane. Sheriff is behind me in the right lane about 30 yards back, reds and blues on. I look in the mirror, and this little red thing suddenly turns into a really BIG red thing. I tense up (the wrong reaction), and BAM. I'm slammed from behind. Totalled my car, seriously damaged, if not totalled the brand new Camry in front of me, damaged the rear end of the truck in front of the Camry, and dented the bumper of the Jimmy in front of the pickup. The guy that hit me was doing around 40mph. He was an airhead rich little bastard that went to my highschool.. he was 16, and that was his second wreck. I guess the bright flashing lights distracted him too much to see the 20 or so cars stopped at the light ahead of him!

That sucks ! I was in a 5 way tuesday myself ! Stopped at a red light on Freya St. Except I was aslice of bread as the skirve who hit me went between me and the new Dodge Ram 4x4 on my left at about 35-40 mph taking out the left side of my car and he finally stopped 40 ft down in the back of a flatbed and the rear dullies of a frieght truck ! The scumbag gets out of his car and asks if everyone is OK and then he runs off leaving his girl friend who tells the cops she was driving. Of course she has a susp liscense gives the cops a false name no insurance nada...True Love I guess !!! My car was the only one besides the A-holes that needed towing...

Glad you're okay. Forgot you moved to PA. We need to get a shoot together sometime. I was in a 3 way crash in April, a week before my birthday. I just left work on my college campus in my 89 Ford Escort, and there is a crosswalk in the middle of the road for students. You are supposed to stop when there is somebody waiting. Well, there was a girl waiting there, and the lady in front of me stopped, I stopped, but the guy behind me didn't. BAM! Slammed into me, and I bumped into the lady in front of me. Nothing happened to her car or my front bumper, but my rear was crumpled. The guy wasn't from the area, so he didn't know to watch for stopped cars there. He had a near new talon, but his car wasn't damaged to well. Luckily, he took full responsibility for it, saving me the hassle of fighting it(since it was completely his fault.) Of course, there is the hassle of how much I am going to get for it. They had people look it over, and said it was totalled. It was drivable, but it was only worth around $1000, and repairs were estimated at $3300. I had just gotten the head gasket fixed for $600 not six months earlier. It only had 55,000 miles on it though. I paid $600 for it, but that's because my garage accidently sold the car I originally. So he sold me the Escort at the same price as the other one, even though he was selling the Escort for $1000. He said it was only driven by an old lady. It had 44,000 on it when I got it in 2000. I ended up getting $1500 for, which was more than I expected. I'm happy though. [:D] I picked up a 92 Mercury Sable for $1900, even though the guy said it was worth about $3300. V6, A/C, PW, PS, PL, Keyless entry, Digital Speedometer/Fuel gauge/Tachometer. Pretty sweet. I still like my old car though. It served me well. Reminds me of a funny incident, at least for me... I was driving through a construction zone in Souix Falls SD about a decade ago. A flagman stopped traffic and the two cars in front of me stop, I stop, and the guy behind me stops. The guy behind him rams him and shoves his grille into my bumper and well as trashing the back of his car. My truck was undamaged, but the middle of the sandwich was totaled. A cop shows up to do all the paperwork. When we are finished, he holds out his hand to stop traffic so we can cross the highway to get back to our vehicles. Then history repeats itself. The first two cars stop, but the third one rams the second one, right in front of us. The cop loses his cool and shouts for all to hear: "GODDAMN PEOPLE DRIVING WITH THEIR HEADS UP THEIR ASSES!!!!" A second cop approaches and first cop yells: "CITE HIM", while pointing at the offending driver. I imagine it went downhill from there, but I had enough fun for one day, and left.

Been in two of those myself. First one was 8 months after I got my car, a 1998 Honda Accord EX V6, on the Dallas Parkway in Addison. I was the meat in a 3 way. Checvy S10 pickup stops, I stop, Isuzu Trooper doesn't stop, puts me into the truck. Second one was last fall north bound on the tollway at 5:30 on a Friday night. You can imagine the traffic backup. Someone way ahead did something stupid and brought traffic to a rapid halt. Car 1 (Honda Accord) stopped, Car 2 stopped (Me), Car 3(S10 Pickup) stopped, Car 4 (BMW 330ci 2 days old) stopped, Car 5 (Suburban(didn't stop). 5 hits 4 puts 4 into 3 which puts 3 into...... and so on. The BMW by far got the worse of it. Back and front, airbag deployed, and the driver was pretty shookup. The good thing about both accidents was that no one was hurt. And that is the important thing. An unfortunate thing you may face is the fact that the better you take care of a car the worse you get screwed in situations like this. The car is a 1993? Looks like a 2002 from the photo. Probably been babied all its life. Insurance adjuster comes along and pays off for a 1993 car, no consideration for condition or extra features. I actually had a friend who got t-boned by an, uh, illegal immigrant with no license, no insurance. He had a nice little pickup, forgot what kind. At any rate, this thing was probably 6-7 years old but looked as good as the day it was born, inside and out. Well, he meets with the adjuster (his, of course) to take a look at it and is told he will get about half what the truck would sell for on the street. He takes issue and is told, "Well, it does look as clean as you describe it, to me." No sh**!!! Worst part, illegal walks because of some paperwork issue. My friend was there and wondered aloud when INS would show up to at least haul the guy off. The judge threatened with the old "contempt" bit. Now he has no truck and higher insurance all because he was driving to work one day. Hope you fare better. Good luck.

Yes, we were, by definition. Baltimore/Washington has the 2nd worst traffic in the nation. You really don't have a choice but to tailgate most of the time. The biggest problem was the lane next to us was running out, so we had everyone shooting to the front and horning in. Mix in the idiots that don't see it coming and slam on the brakes, and it was an accident looking to happen.

You may want to check first. Insurance companies around here do not allow you to touch a "totalled" car. They won't pay unless they get it "as is". They justify it with the reasoning that it is no difference that taking a sledge hammer to the car to increase the damage. That way they can take the stereo, wheels, working parts, parts that can be fixed, and sell them. A parted out car is worth more than we realize. They know those items are worth money and they usually have a way of keeping you from reclaiming some of your loss.
