I have a Browning A5 SBS, patterns like a screen door. So I'm thinking of getting the barrel setup for removable choke. Plan to run 00 buck, no slugs.

Which choke system?
What gunsmith?

Obligatory picture....

I had Mike Orlen over on Shotgun World forum do a couple of barrels for me.  The work was fine and the turnaround was very quick, like sent off on Monday back on Friday quick.  Don't expect much in the way of communication unless you call him.  If you don't need to talk to him, just write down what you need done and send a money order for the amount (listed on the website) with the barrel and you should have if back in a couple of days.

Any recommendation on which choke system to go with? And only $55 to thread for a choke...That Is awesome...

have you checked the bore size?

Mike Orlen and Truchokes, I am sure you have the barrel wall thickness to install any type you want, but I have truchokes, done by Mike Orlen on my model 11 riot gun and I really like them.

The easiest to find, least expensive, and most produced for is going to be the "rem choke" style

You can literally get chokes at walmart if you need to, on top of that everyone and their mom makes chokes for it, to include extended, "lateral shot spreaders", and some other more exotic shit

In 1984 I bought an A-5 with (IIRC) a 28" "long tom" barrel.  I had it cut down and an external Poly Choke installed by a local gunsmith.  Since then I have used that gun to kill: white tailed deer (slugs and 00 buckshot), squirrel, rabbit, dove, quail, pheasant, turkey, ducks and geese.  I love it.  I can change the pattern in the field, quickly and without having to keep track of a bunch of choke tubes.

Can you back bore those?  If you can, that should help with the patterns as well.

As for who could do the work, I would say Briley, but that's mostly because they're right down the street from my work lol

Which model? my model 11s and regular auto 5s always ran fine with the standard "spring, ramped ring (ramp toward muzzle), clamp ring, barrel" but if you have a 3" gun shooting 2 3/4", polychoked gun, or are shooting very light loads you may need to take the ramped ring and put it at the bottom of the mag tube, before the spring.

YOu should also consider relieving the forcing cone in front of the chamber with a brake cylinder hone.  It may improve the groups without need for a choke.  I think this is called back-bore.

Vang does this, but I don't know if he works on the Browning

Before you get it threaded for choke tubes have you tried buckshot with flite control wads?

Id back bore it before i added a removable choke.  i dont know how thick the barrel is but i cant imagine there is a whole lot of material to work with on an old a5.

Kind of - back boring opens up the entire barrel up to the choke/muzzle so that the diameter of the barrel behind the muzzle increases size.  If the constriction at the muzzle stays the same then it tightens up the choke.  IE if the orig bore is 1 in and the constriction at the choke is .95 then you have .5 in of choke.  If you bore out the barrel to 1.15 in and leave the choke at .95 then you have .25 in of choke now.  The forcing cone is bored out but so is the area past the forcing cone.  Sometimes you can get better patterns by simply lengthening the forcing cone so it doesn't deform the lead shot as badly but i dont know if that will fix Op's problem.

The only guns Ive found it worth the money to lengthen the forcing cones are .410s because of the shot stringing and shot deforming issues with 3 in shells.  I am a big upland hunter and not a competitive shooter though so some might not agree.

I think rem choke comes in a close second for most available and cheapest.  Win-Chokes are very inexpensive, and shared by Mossberg, Browning, and Weatherby.

And many of Remington's newer shotguns no longer use rem chokes.  The have switched over to Pro-Bore.

Either one will work fine in the ops case, but I'd lean towards the win-choke system.

You need to make sure the springs are set up correctly. If it won't run something else is wrong.

I've built several, all from guns that had jacked barrels to begin with (now sense in ruining the good barrels out there). I don't shoot a lot of shotgun, but I enjoy this one. I need to get a decelerator pad for mine, the steel but plate I made is uncomfortable.

Beat me to it.

Go buy some Federal Flite Control and try it.

I ran a class with it and it's just awesome stuff.

My pattern at 25 yards was better than some at 5

I think that you will like a Kick EEZ better.  I have tried both, and prefer the Kick EEZ.

Nope.

I have a bunch of the Federal H132 00 . I don't think that is the flite control.

With those measurements your should be able to go with Rem-Chokes, Win-Choke (same as Browning Invector or Mossberg Accu-choke) or Tru-Chokes. Do you already have some choke tubes of any of those types? If not, go with Rem or Win because the tubes are most common and available in many styles (flush, extended, ported, etc)

Thanks. I do not have any other shotguns with removable chokes, so this is a new thing for me.
I think I'll be sending you a barrel in a week or two.

That would give you a wall thickness around .036 and the ID is small enough to install win chokes.  You could do it.

I have basically the same setup, though it came to me that way on a REALLY heavily used A5.  Its ugly, but it works great.  Much like you, I've dialed tighter and looser in the field.  That's nice for switching back and forth between rabbit and pheasant or for jump shooting waterfowl on the way to/from a blind.

It also saw duty as my backdoor shotgun in the country, and being able to dial in more choke quickly was the end for several raccoons and woodchucks at 35yds.
