Wrap your heads around this one ARFCOMMERS

So two friends and myself are road triping and we decide to call it a day. So we pull into the local motel and get a room. The clerk tells us it $30 for a room so we split it between the three of us. (for you that are bad at math thats $10 a person) So we pull our bags out of the car, put them in the room and decide that we are going to have a few drinks tonight. We go and buy some Wild Turkey for wiskey sours. As we're unlocking the door to our room the clerk walks up and says "Sorry guys, I forgot we changed our rates to $25 a night after we got some stimulus money." He then handed me 5 one dollar bills as a refund. I said thanks and give him $2 as a tip for being honest. We split the other $3. (for you that are bad at math thats $1 a person) So we pound a few drinks and got to thinking... then arguing; If we each got $1 back from the clerk then we each payed $9 for the room. 3 of us at $9 is $27. We gave $2 to the clerk. $27+$2=$29!!!

We origonaly gave the clerk $30 and now only $29 is accounted for. Where did the missing money go?

umm, are you going about this right??

25 for the room
1 for each of you is 3
2 for the clerk=27
27/3 is 9..
I don't see a problem here..

Math Fail.

$25 for the room
$1 for each of you is $3
That is $28
$2 for the clerk is $30

27 minus 2 is 25.  You're counting the $2 tip twice.

You must be really drunk.

You each paid 8.33 for the room. = 25 bucks
You each took a buck =9.33 each
you gave the clerk 2 bucks

9.33 *3=27.99999 +2 bucks = 29..99999 bucks

come up with a newer one.

This question was old and worn when I first read it in a book of brain-teasers I checked out at the elementary school library 25 years ago.

You SPENT $9 each.  The $2 in the clerk's hand is part of what you spent... so you don't ADD it to the money you spent to get back to the original amount.  You need to add your $9 spent each ($27) to the money still in hand ($3).

You gave the clerk $25 for the room and $2 for the tip.  Then you each got a $1 back ($1x3=$3).  It's all there, you just figured wrong.

My question is, where did you stay that only costs $25/night.    Was this per hour?

Since others have already posted both the solution and how old this is, I'll just say this: since you say it was you, where the hell are you paying $25 a night for a hotel? Harare? Or were you just taking a quick trip to 1932?

Let's track the dollars:

initially all $30 goes to the hotel

$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$ (hotel)

but you get a $5 refund, the dollars are now accounted for as such:

$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$ (hotel)

$$$$$                                   (you 3)

you give a $2 tip

$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$ (hotel)

$$$                                       (you 3)

$$                                        (tip)

There's $30 total: $25 hotel, $3 for you 3, $2 tip = $30

No where.  Each of the three of you paid $9 for the room, which equals $27, which is $25 for the room and $2 for the tip.  The other three dollars you got back.

Why would a motel get "Stimulus money"?
Why would the clerk tell you and not keep the money?
You're focused on the wrong things.

The "stimulus money" did not come from the gubbermint.

It came from a pimp, in appreciation for the hotel letting his ho's use their rooms for "stimulation" of their Johns.

OP - whatever you do, do NOT shine a UV lamp onto those sheets!
