I have one, but it's only a Taurus.
There are a few alternatives available. For 629 no locks, I could get a huge one with an 8 3/8" barrel or I could get a 3" barrel. I wonder if one has any advantage over the other. I'm not going to carry it, so I don't care how big it is. I am thinking the long barrel one might be easier, more fun to shoot, but I might be totally wrong about that. Or, I could get a Ruger! Brand new cheaper than a used Smith. Or should I get a Model 19 instead? What do you guys thinK |

Ruger Redhawk with either a 5.5" or 4" barrel. Spend the rest of your money on ammo or reloading components.

I'm going with Ruger. Haven't decided on DA or SA yet though...

Buy Ruger Super Redhawk, have barrel cut to 5", re-crowned and sights reattached. Enjoy!

I have a 629 (no dash) with 8 3/8" barrel. Bought it new around 1980 when they were introduced in stainless, came in a presentation case. Factory trigger is absolutely incredible and so is accuracy. Recoil is a BITCH, though, compared to other 44's that I own.

Super Redhawk, you can send some really stout loads down range.

Colt Anaconda. You can still pick one up on gunbroker.com for 2K.

You really need a 5'' min bbl to burn that slow mag powder.ETA 6''

if you reload, get the ruger.
if you want a more pleasurable shooting experience at the expense of super-hot loadings, get the S&W long barrel if you will ever take it into the woods, get the 3" |

I like my 4" 629 but the 69 looks like a great choice as well. I personally do not like the 8 3/8" barrels, they feel awkward when I shoot them, I like my barrels 6" or less.

If you're doing wheelguns, I'd say ruger GP100 or vintage colt M1917 (45 acp revolver). A 44 mag just doesn't make much sense to me, unless you are afraid of a bear attack, but whatever floats your boat.

The 69 puts a smile on my face every time I shoot it and the lock is stupid easy to disable. If you want an L frame 44 mag, you have to buy a lock gun.

had a Ruger redhawk...sold it. Found a box of ammo i had for it recently and now want another 44 mag so i can shoot those rounds.
this time I think I am going to go Smith & Wesson, with a lock if i have to. Rugers are just too damn fugly. |

Better than the Smith and the Ruger in looks, fit, finish, durability, accuracy......... |

i have a 4" 29-10 i bought used last year i have about 200 rounds of full house 44's through it and the lock has not locked up the gun as GD assures me it will
I enjoy shooting it and carrying it |

My favorite is a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 10.5" barrel that I bought used for $400. It was dirty and banged up a little when I bought it. I cleaned it up and lubed it and it shoots like a dream. The trigger breaks at around 2 lbs.
It had the scope mount and a shitty red dot when I got it. I remounted the mount when I tore it down for cleaning and put a cheap 4x scope on it. After I zeroed the scope I shot a 2.5" group at 50 yards and a 4.5" group at 100 yards. This was my first time shooting a scoped handgun. I'm sure the gun will do better than that with a better shooter. I also have a mint pre-lock 629 classic with a 6.5 inch barrel. It is a very nice gun, but the trigger on the Ruger is better and I don't have to worry about banging it up. |
