Im looking for a good semi auto AK in either 5.45x39 or 7.62x39, anyone out there got one or know of a good place to get one. I saw a used maadi today in good condition for $350. Im looking to keep it below 400. Any help?

You should be able to find a Romanian SAR for cheaper than that in pretty good shape. Not positive as they are too dangerous for me to purchase here anymore, thanks to the wisdom of the annointed leaders of my state. Good luck and I'm a bit jealous.

you can get a good one for less than 400... take this post over to the AK section under The Armory section... if you don't get too much action here. [:)]

Get yourself a Sar from Aim Surplus. After transfer and shipping, you should be under $350.

get a SAR 1, 7.62x39. ammo is less than $100.00 a case, and 30 round Bulgarian mags can be found all day for $10.00 each. get one made after 2000, as they are most likely to have straight sights and gas tubes. if the finish is less than pretty, you can refinish it yourself cheap......Campybob is the expert on AK's, post any questions on the AK site, he'll answer them!!!!PS go to gunsamerica.com, you can find them for about $300.00 if you look. Stay away from the WASR's, they're either low caps or may have a crummy conversion done on them....

I vote for either a Romanian SAR-1 (7.62 x 39) or SAR-2 (5.45 x 39) from AIM Surplus, as mentioned above. However, you may find that you can do just as well or better buying locally (as I did), when you consider shipping charges and FFL transfer fees. In addition, you get to handpick your rifle and ensure that the rifle isn't "canted." The earlier models (before 2001) were more likely to have canted front sight blocks or gas blocks. See this link for more info on Romanian AKs and canting: Romanian Kalashnikov Rifles The production year is part of the rifle's serial number, i.e. "2003-xxxx" or "xxxx-03" The latest versions have much better wood furniture, and the metal finish has improved (but it still isn't the best-looking.) I'm very happy with my SAR-1, it's a great little blaster. Cheap ammo too. Head on over to the AK forum, everyone there is very helpful.

I've got both, but I prefer the SAR-2 (5.45x39) to the SAR-1 (7.62x39) You'll enjoy either one of them, and outside of the Century R1A1 that I bought for $389, I think those SAR-1,2,3's are the best value out there for military style autoloaders. Hard to beat. You can get any one the three SAR weapons and some mags for less than $350-$375 if you look around.
