I've seen at least 15 or 20 P-ups or 4 runners with a rusted out frame by the rear shackle. Only one's that come close are jeeps that are about 10 years older. Had a 84, great truck engine and drivetrain wise, body was a rustomatic, bed side rust [bubbling] at the seam in less then a year. |

3-4 starters, alternators, 2-3 brake and clutch cylinders, 1 set of wheel bearings, some minor carburetor work, 1 head gasket, 5 sets of tires, 3 radiators, 4th battery. Normal wear and tear though someone might question if a head gasket is normal wear and tear. The A/C crapped out in stages. On the 3rd clutch. Replaced the mechanical fuel pump and water pump once already. 3-4 thermostats. No EFI, 'puters, sensors, etc. No rebuilds of the manual tranny or differential. All fluids and filters, plugs, wires, dist cap replaced every 30K, except oil which is changed every 4K miles Nothing lasts 23 years without wearing out sometime |

Well I don't see American trucks rusting out in less then a year here and frames are usually in good shape long after the body morphs into iron oxide. Heck,my cheapass Sonoma that's 10 years old still is mostly black framewise and thats my drive to work 99% of the time winter or summer. Only a touch of surface rust where one gets gravel chips and I just sand, rustmort and paint those once a year. You couldn't keep my 84 from rusting no matter what you did, it was some seriously crappy steel with no surface treatment. I'd place them on par with the Nissan 720 pickup, great engine, lousy body. |

Heck, the Brits INVENTED it along with the Italians with their "pre-rusted" new car schemes. If it's not dripping oil or shedding rust it's not brit Iron oxide. The rustworms had a field day with them. |

True dat, One of the guys I know showed me his galvanic "rustholes" in his Disco, nothing like placing aluminium [brit spelling] and steel on each other to create the perfect storm in the corrosion world. |

To be fair my 1985 S-10 is still running strong.
Even though it has only 145K miles on it. I have only had to change fuilds,plugs and filters, along with brake pads. its on its second clutch and I put a new set of front wheel bearings on last summer. |

I have a 2007 with 12,500 miles on the clock. It's definitely the best mid side truck that I've ever driven.
 It has a few "minor" mods.

my gm would have not lasted long enough to have frame rot...
buddies Toy been to the shop once since 03- ball joint recall- replaced and put a new serpentine belt on without even asking (wear part GM would not even consider replaceing) my 03 GM car has been 10+ for warranty work - had to argue 3/4 of them to get them to fix it...Fuck GM. This simple fact got me to purchase a Toy van for teh wife...god that thing just destroys the 03 GM Venture we traded... |

The URD one is nice, but I like the fact that I retained my warrenty and have 300+ ft/lbs of torqe from 2K RPM's on up.

My '88 has 306,000 miles on it. Still going strong. Put new injectors and normal wear parts along with a three clutches and a transmission or two. Liked it so much I bought a second one with 75,000 miles on it.
Body rot is a factor but the frame is still good. |
