Nice bunch of gats you got there. I have 2 AKs myself. I never understood the hate.

Sweet AK's Bro.
I'm still kicking myself for selling my 3. One of which was a BEAUTIFUL Poly Tech Legend, Milled. Danny |

Once you get past feeling dirty for touching one, AK's multiply quickly

Nice start!
I never hated them...just didn't think much of them. Then, I bought one. Well, they've grown into a full addiction now. Just picked up two more today (and I honestly told myself NO MORE GUNS this year...fuck!). |
|
I'm the pickiest fucker when it comes to mags. I MUST have the flatback kind, like the Chinese and AIM Eastern Europe kind. That ribbed shit looks sloppy and pokes your hand.

Nice AKs.
I bought a SGL31 too. I't is an accurate gun, but I don't like the balance, it is very nose heavy compared to an AR. Maybe I'm spoiled? The ammo price on the milsurp is more than enough to make up for the imbalance for me though. 12 cents a round? I have no problem burning a half case a range trip. Besides re-learning how to use those primitive sights is fun. |
|
I bought one a while back for familiarization purposes. Nothing to get all excited about. (It is a milled receiver one, FWIW) ETA: Nice guns, OP!

I LOVE AKs. They always work.
ETA: I own 5. One AR. AKs more fun! |

I think the hate goes back to watching nightly TV during Viet Nam.
I'm thinking next one, I'll do the beat up battle worn look. Just buy a cheap one and rub the finish off it and wrap it with tape. They seem to all have personalities. I also have drum mags, assorted mags for costume changes... it's an addiction I tell ya. |

Got into the SKS and AK platforms due to the Clinton AWB. Bought my Arsenal SLR-95 milled Bulgarian because it just felt right, compared to the $200.00 Romanian stamped AKs with the skeletonized wood stocks. Still my favorite AK. Decided to keep the thumbhole stock because I actually rather like the one it came with, and the trigger is amazing and I would hate to change it out. It's 100% Bulgarian manufacture in its current configuration.

I remember in 2004 or 2005 getting into a heated debate here because I let it slip that I didn't think owning AKs was patriotic.
Last year, I got into the same argument with Jim Scoutten in his forum here - because he refuses to recognize AKs on his shows. |

They definitely have their own personality, kind of like the way the ring affected Frodo.

welcome to the darkside, and for the record, i own both ar's and ak's

My biggest issue with AK's is finding consistent 7.62x39 ammunition.

I joined this site for the AR15 technical information - and I initially had an attitude that owning an AK was somehow unpatriotic. I've been changed for a number of reasons. I've come to embrace them as firearms, projects, investments, toys, and art forms. The cool thing about AKs, is how many choices you have. The three I selected have special qualities which caused me to buy them. I like authenticity (within my budget). I prefer that the gun is built on a foreign receiver if possible - like the SGL31 and Draco Pistol below. The case where I bought a USA-made receiver was the 1960's Polish Milled AK, and that was based on that firearm being made on a well finished milled receiver like original AKs - it's a very solid gun with an action that works as if it had roller bearings. For me, the AK is raw material to be worked into something unique. I enjoy finishing furniture, upgrading certain parts to be more correct or better quality, painting little numbers on sight leafs, etc. Some people take the base AK and rub them in strategic spots with steel wool to give them the battle worn look. It's all good. ARs are often bolt together, Lego-type projects that I don't feel are as enjoyable as creating an AK. Anyway - here are pics of my three Kalashnikov-type guns, an AK74, an AK47, and an AK47 pistol. I've also done 2 Yugo M70AB2 underfolders which I gave to my sons for Christmas of 2009 because the boys thought underfolders were the sweetest AKs to them. I have bayonets for the two rifles that I probably should have included. The AK74 (SGL31), with actual commie-made Zeiss 4x32 quality optic http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a213/xmya55/AK74-SGL31.jpg The AK47 (1960s Polish Milled AK) http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a213/xmya55/1960PolishMilledAK47.jpg The AK47 Pistol (Draco) http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a213/xmya55/DracoAK47Pistol.jpg Feel free to discuss how you used to hate AKs too, or show your favorite AK(s), or why the AKs you selected were unique and said "buy me", or how AKs are more fun to buildup than ARs. Enjoy your Saturday evening. Hope you like my AKs... |

When i was a poor young man i used to have more than a few AK's. My brother and i would go to the range with a case of ammo and get them red hot. AK's can take abuse. Then i went decades without owing one.I Recently got bored with AR's and picked up a pair of converted MAK 90s. kinda nice to mix it up once in a while

Cant have just one. I own 2 currently. A 1983 M70 AB2 ALL MATCHING and a 1990 Maadi kit build

I'm up to 16 AKs or AK-based rifles. Every time I say I'm not buying another one, a few months later I'm buying another one...

lawd. That furniture is beautiful. |

After doing these two M07AB2s for my sons, I really want my own. They started with black plastic furniture, and some things that bothered me - like rear sights that were blacked over and unreadable. Here's how they turned out... http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a213/xmya55/Yugos_Finished003.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a213/xmya55/Yugos_Finished002.jpg So someday I want to have one that matches the ones I gave my kids for that Christmas of '09. Nice looking AK's but i personally do not like the underfolders. No cheek weld |

Accuracy is on par with my SA M5, which is to say quite good for an AK. The barrel is on the heavy side, and when shooting decent ammo like American Eagle or PPU it'll hold the bull on an SR-1 target at 100 yards. That's about as good as I can do with open iron sights. Reliability has been good though one of my magazines needs a bit of tweaking. The biggest problem with the Norinco 84Ses is finding magazines, and then affording them. I was able to buy several off Gunbroker and a couple other boards. But nowadays there average around $50 each and the rifles do not accept any other magazines without modification (some folks have modified AK-74 mags for them). |

Join me! And together we can rule the galaxy as father and son!
I dunno, putting "moral content" into an inanimate object? Like a gun is evil? That sounds kinda liberalish! I always love me some AK's and my 5.56 AK with a cold barrel can shoot 3 MOA at 100 meters. Oh and decent ammo, don't be shootin no wolf out of it for accuracy. ONce i went for AK's I really wanted more accuracy, so i stick with high end variants like Valmet and SiG 556. Costs a shit load though. |

Draco's fucking rock. It has everything an ARFCOM member and red blooded American loves. Big bang bigger fireball.

Just like the TSA claims they keep terrorists away from airplanes - I contend my AK pistol has kept very bad things from approaching my truck. |

I recently got an SGL-31 in Plum, my only regrets are not buying more ammo and not going the OD green route!

Quoted: I dunno, putting "moral content" into an inanimate object? Like a gun is evil? That sounds kinda liberalish! I agree, it was liberal-think, and praise the Lord I was cured. Like I mentioned, I watched a lot of Walter Cronkite type Viet Nam stuff as was happening in the 60's. AKs were pure evil then, and it was the basis for my skewed opinion which has changed. There was a time too, when I would say I wasn't pro-gun too. Not an anti, but just not pro. This website has taken me off the fence regarding a few subjects, and help make me be the AK toting, right wing conservative I am today. |
