I'm taking it to the shop to see if they can fix it. If not, are there any good alternates that don't cost $500?

Edit: Went to youtube and figured out how to take it apart. It's a $2 belt that broke. Part is on the way on amazon prime.

Kirby FTW! Over a hundred years and still going strong as a company. Bought a refurbed on in "98" for $385, still works like a boss. Made in USA

A gold vacuum would be very heavy. I don't think you've thought this through.

I've had two Dysons and neither lasted very long. Not impressed.  We got a Hoover from a big box store that was supposedly meant for pet hair and we don't have a pet- but it works better than our Dysons ever did.

I have never owned a Dyson, but we bought a Shark from Sam's, and it has been great. I have a cat and a house full of kids.  We can wear out a vacuum in no time. Our Shark has been bullet proof so far. We have had it for about a year. The one at Sam's also has a steamer that comes with it. We use it on the hardwood and tile and it is awesome.

What about it is not working right? Parts are reasonable on ebay/amazon and they are simple machines- I replaced the clutch in my ~10 year old DC07 Animal and it is running great again.

Just bought.a eureka airspeed to replace our older dyson17 this very minute...just ran it over the very same spot the dyson had done this morning and it has picked up tons more crap than anticipated.....89 bucks from Wally world...

Our dyson is about 6 years old now, still working fine. We did snag a new DC33 on BF sale at walmart for $199 though. (just walked in late friday, they still had a couple).

We are gonna clean the old one up an toss it on craigslist

Loving my Dyson DC14 All Floors.  Got it as a refurb from Woot.  Best vacuum I've ever owned.

I hear the Shark Navigator Liftway Pro is a nice machine at a lower cost than a Dyson.

Get an old Electrolux canister vacuum (not the new ones, they're crap).  To me that was the best, most durable vacuum ever made. They can last decades, and are very repairable.  For a good one you'll pay a few hundred dollars for it, but it will be the last vacuum you ever need, even if it's 40 years old.

It's leaving balls of pet hair all over the place. I've cleaned the brushes, but it didn't help. It sucks fine through the hose, but not through the bottom.

Same here - Kirby G4 - going on 22 years.  Only thing that sucks better is a Shop Vac.

Kirby G series. We have2 one each floor. They are heavy. take them in every 2-3 years for a tune up like brushes for 20 bucks. They work great. We also have a Shark at the Flower shop. MIL gave it to us.
She had a Dyson. She says the Shark is ten times better. I also have a little bagless dirt devil I use to pick up bulky stuff like a popcorn spill. Saves on Kirby bags.

I have a couple of Kirby G6s.    Great vacuums...but heavy, so the Dyson gets pulled out the most.

To the OP:   Go to woot.com....they'll have at least one Dyson in the upcoming week (generally refurb units around $200).

Or...

Dyson sells their refurbs on ebay...  http://www.ebay.com/sch/dyson.usa/m.html?item=111493706416&hash=item19f58af2b0&pt=US_Vacuum&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

Rreplace your lower clutch $59 at a Dyson Service Center or do it yourself and you will be good for another 7 years.

Had a Dyson and it died. Bought a Miele canister and it is about 2 years old and it has been great so far. You can adjust the vac setting for carpet, hard floors, furniture, drapes. Mine hasa motorized head for carpets, an attachment for hand woven wool rugs and an attachment for hard floors. German made. Top quality. Hepa filters. Good stuff.

Don't waste your money getting it fixed. I did the same thing and it never ran the same again. Get a new vac.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

We've a seven year old DC07, still sucks but the hose is shot. Won't spend the Dyson money again as we got a very good deal on this one.

Have a Shark I use at work, hate it.

There is one of those in a closet in the downstairs lobby of my office that the cleaning crew uses. I noticed it has a sticker on it from the 1984 winter olympics

I have one at the cabin.  It was my grandmother's, who died 25 years ago.  I think the vacuum itself dates from around 1970.  All these years I've had it worked on once, to replace a belt.  It's suction is stronger then the Dyson I have at home, and I like the fact I can get under and around furniture better.

But you have to find one made in the U.S. before Electrolux went bankrupt.  After that the quality dramatically declined.  The originals were made to last forever, and were extremely well engineered.  Which isn't necessarily a good thing if your business is selling vacuum cleaners.

We had one. It was great for years. It needed rehab and I came home one day to find my wife had trashed it.

She bought a Hoover upright, a real piece of crap. She has been cussing it for 3 years or so.

I recently did a full "tune up" on our Animal. One of the lower suction hoses had a leak, and the "reusable" filter was toast. There is also a riser manifold that snaps out and was clogged full or solidified gunk. I just wrapped the hose in duct tape, sine it has steel ribbing inside.
