25 years ago I had a couple Losi and Team Associated trucks. They were fun but battery tech lacked so run time was very short. I then switched to nitro which ran longer, but were exponentially more expensive while being exponentially less reliable. I eventually gave up and moved on to other stuff.

Now I have kids of my own and I'd like to get something we can all play with. I see the advances in LiPo batteries and brushless motors have made their way into RC and it looks like power and run times are pretty unbelievable compared to 25yrs ago.

I'd like to get something fun for me and that my 7 and 8 yr old could handle. Something durable that we can thrash on and something upgradeable to satisfy my urge to tinker. I'm not looking to get into racing, but I do want something fast but maybe with a governor type mode for my kids.

I glanced at some traxxas trucks but I really don't know what I'm looking at. I'd like to spend $400-$600 tops for now. Any suggestions?

Over your price point but got a xmaxx it is blast. Traxxas isn't cheap, but the parts are ever where. The Traxxas summit is also a ton of fun.  Good luck lots of choices out there.

My son and I went through that whole phase a couple years back, Traxes 4x4 is the way to go, brushless and lipos. It aint cheap but they are fairly indestructible. Alot lot of fun with the younguns. we still have our rock crawlers here somewhere.

I bought my kid an ECX Torment, we can't kill that thing. Get the lipo version.

Do they still make the Grasshoppers? Was my first and was a blast to drive. And thus why I got an Ofna Hyper 7 which is nitro. Seems the nitro has pretty much gone away since the last time I looked at doing it again 5 or so years ago.

Does HPI not make good stuff anymore? Back when I was into it, the Nitro RS3 was the be all/end all for on-road.

I HPI isn't bad, but the part support is not great. That's the biggest issue with many of the brands. You can even get good cars from China, but when they break you want a month for parts.

while i'd rather fly than drive, the traxxas 1/16 e-revo aka merv, has got me wanting a truck.  I'd have to mod it with an FPV system though.

Crawlers are a lot of fun, axial for that.
Rock racers are fun to break, axial for that as well.
Shortcourse is a hell of a lot of fun and pretty durable, losi, associated, traxxas, hpi, all are pretty equal.
Folks immediately jump to slash 4x4, but 2wd is way more fun, I've got both, 2wd gets way more use. I really only run my 4x4 on slick surfaces to get all drifty, I don't think it's seen dirt in a couple of years. We build a track in the backyard every summer and run 2wd shortcourse truck and buggy all summer, it's a hoot.

What ever chassis looks cool to you, as long as lipo, brushless, and 2.4 ghz you will have fun.

Cheap chargers take forever, budget for a decent lipo balancing charger while you are at it.
Don't be fooled by chargers that charge multiple batts, all that matters is amperage. A 10amp multi charger will take longer to charge 2 batts simultaneously than a 10amp single will take to charge consecutively.

The brushless Traxxas stampede 4x4 or slash 4x4 are probably the most durable and upgradable trucks on the market for bashing around with.  With the VXL brushless system you can run up to 3s lipo.  The VXL system can be set to training mode which limits the ESC to 50% forward power and 50% reverse  power so you can set it for your kids just using the button on the ESC.

I would recommend 2s lipo as an all around good choice but if you decide to run 3s lipo be prepared to buy metal axle shafts because you will quickly twist the plastic ones off. MIP makes really nice steel  CVDs that will cure that problem.  They aren't cheap but they are extremely hard to break.  Each piece is sold separately so if you do break them you can fix them relatively cheaply.

There are too many companies that make upgrades for Traxxas products to list but almost every RC shop will have parts to get you up and running again if you do happen to break your truck.

I just picked up a Grasshopper last month for $200 for the car, servo, batter/charger, and the transmitter.  My and my daughter are having a blast with it. Got my eye on a hornet next.

Go to Amazon for the best deals.

I'm a fan of the Traxxas 4X2 Stampede and Slash model trucks.  You can get brushed XL-5 models for around $200.  They're simple to work on and I enjoy them more than the 4X4's. If you want more power you can go with the brushless VXL models but the brushed have plenty of power IMO.  I have 2 of the Stampede's and my kid's and I have a blast bashing them in the yard.

Traxxas hard to beat, but lots of options out there.

Fair warning, Lipos are not Nicad/NiMh and don't like to be abused.  In particular do not ever charge them unattended.  Don't buy a crap battery charger.  Do not over discharge them.  At least they don't have a memory.

I just finished up a Grasshopper build.  It is hilarious how much the rear end hops around.  Through for some reason doing donuts on the slick garage floor is a riot.

+1 on the rock crawler.  I bought one for my son and that thing is stupid amounts of fun.

And when people ask "Is brushless worth the money?"

Looking at this:

Traxxas slash 4x4 platinum

Can anyone recommend a decent radio, receiver, battery and charger to complete the package?

If you have multiple kids like I do then get 2 traxxas slash trucks in 4x2. Always more fun to run them together than a single 4x4 at the same cost.

This is what I did but I went with the Stampede.  My nephew has the 4X2 slash and it doesn't do as well in the grass but both of them are equally fun. I actually prefer the 4X2 to the 4X4's for the type of terrain we use them on.
