I just got a call from a finance company saying that a Guadalupe Gomez had not paid on his car and I was the co-signer.

How do I find out if their are others?

Get your credit reports and check for others.

And it may be time to cut the top off of Guadalupe's Jeep.

get a free credit report from one or more of the credit bureaus.

Clarkhoward.com probably has tons of info on it.

You know what's weird? Before I even clicked on the topic I was going to make a crack about illegal aliens on this thread.

Then I see the name Guadalupe.

Yeah I know, go figure.

I haven't borrowed money in almost a decade.

Wow dude.  I' sorry to hear that.  Maybe it will be possible to track down Guadalupe.  I would contact local LEO's first.  We get these cases and generally have to turn them over to the Feds or State Police.  The sooner you do this and get the ball rolling the better.  I wish you the best.

You never signed. They are fishing for "a" person with your name by going down the phone book for the half of the state you are in who signed.

They will keep pestering you until you send a letter per fed law.

If I ever meet the annoying debt collector who called my house 30 times about some debt I never took I'll violate the CoC and post pics, just for doing her job.

But, did the phone number that they left for you to call back match the one on the website?  Just making sure.

DO NOT, under any circumstances, acknowledge the debt, or take responsibility for it. Fight it in your credit report, get a lawyer, and fight it tooth and nail. If you acknowledge the debt, they own you.

Why would anyone ever acknowledge a debt they do not owe?

People do dumb things if they think it is cheaper and easier to do it that way,

However, most Credit Reporting agencies are usually willing to work with you free or at least free reports to clear up something like this if YOU get dinged and have reported it.

Good place to start:  Annual Credit Report.
It's a free service as required by law although they try to sell you additional perks along the way...

ETA:  This happened to my Mom once.
