don't have to compensate for a lack of accuracy by using a bigger bullet.

Cue the badass meme, and, flame suit is on.

I cant hit shit with pistols! All my LEO friends are like fucking snipers with nine
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:06:05 PM EST
Lol. I shoot .45 for the same reason.
It carries the added benefit of killing things dead, so I don't need 15/18 rounds to do it.
It's simple economics.

Glock 19

Mozambique technique and you can't go wrong
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:08:14 PM EST
9mm might occasionally expand to .45.
But .45 will never shrink to 9mm.

Bigger holes make them leak faster.
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:08:22 PM EST
all pistol rounds suck dog shit. the difference between 9 and 45 is, in my opinion, not enough to argue over. I carry both from time to time and would prefer to be shot by neither one.

Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:09:55 PM EST
I shoot/carry 9, because I learned a few years ago that no matter how awesome I am on a one-way range, a good chunk of that accuracy goes out the window when it's a two-way range.

Higher capacity FTMFW.

Still live plinking with .45

Right there with you. It's a very accurate round.

USP 45, 12+1 .45 ACP. Your argument is invalid.

I'm more accurate with my 45 than with anything else.
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:17:06 PM EST
I carry a G30 .45 but yesterday I rented a G19 to compare and for the same exact footprint and a little less weight the 9mm offers weight savings and 5 more rounds.. makes me want to switch to 9mm, since the ballistics are relatively comparable, and the rounds went in the same place with either gun, and in fact the g19 seemed to have better follow up.

It's pretty much a given. Take any highly proficient shooter and he will be faster on 9mm (factory loadings) than on higher power loads. not because its better but because he can get back on target faster and manage recoil easier.

whatever pistol you can carry is generally better than the alternative.

Exact footprint........are you sure? Because I don't think so.

Extactly what I am saying, .45 does not have to be a hinderance to capacity.

get both?

ETA: about two years ago here, i got slightly nerdy.

I multiplied the capacity of each full sized glock, by the surface area (if it were perfectly round) of the expanded diameter of the .45, .40 and 9mm versions of i think gold dot? standard velocity.

the overall surface area came out roughly equal, and since pistol rounds really only make holes the diameter of their expanded size, i think there is really no appreciable difference, except that 9mm gets a few more chances, and .45 has a slightly more forgiving margin of error for accuracy.

ultimately i see no real difference, just preference.

i bet somebody who cared to try and find that post could find it, but im about to leave for errands

I like keeping it up longer. Some reason this website is named after a gun that shoots a smaller caliber faster.
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:44:14 PM EST
I shoot both and got rid of my 40sw for the same reasons.

As a kid i grew up on BHP and 1911s.

As an adult all I shot were glocks.

I'm accurate with glock 9mms and 1911s, but accuracy falls when I shoot 40

Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:52:52 PM EST
I'm artificially limited to low cap mags, so it's mainly the size of the gun that makes 9mm well suited. 10 rounds still fit.

I have 9 and .45acp, though, in case I want to OC when I go to PA and I don't have to worry about concealing anything.
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 2:55:20 PM EST
Lack of accuracy by using a bigger bullet? Because the people that can't shoot usually miss by seven hundredths of an inch.

Also, you use a smaller caliber because you need more rounds since half your shots miss.

You guys can debate the 9mm vs .45 all you want, but I've gone a step further, all the way down to .380. Never thought I would but I did.

My new years resolution was to carry more...this was the solution.

I've tried carrying the full size G17, then mid size CZ's and just went down to a Ruger LCP .380 pocket pistol.

Using a good pocket holster I can drop it in my pants front pocket and not even know its there it's so comfortable....something I just can't do with any 9mm, even the smaller ones. Underarm and IWB holsters just don't do it for me and wind up causing me not to carry when I should be.

Is it the optimum combat caliber? Nope not at all, I know its limitations, but its on me anywhere I can carry legally...not in my safe, not on my dresser, not in my truck console.

A smaller gun, even a .380 that's comfortable enough to carry even in shorts is better than a .45 or 9mm or .50 cal left at home. That's the conclusion I've finally came to.

If I'm going to a rough area I may still carry my G17 loaded with H critical duty. For range shooting and home defence I still love full size pistols, but for everyday carry I discovered the micros and I'm loving it.

The main thing is find something that is comfortable enough to carry everyday and go with that.

If 9mm was good enough for Zimmerman to get a (fatal) one shot stop with it, it's good enough for you (or me).

Clearly, 45 is far more accurate and better in every way.

Indeed. That's been my general experience as well. Still love my gen 2.5 G30 though.

This is the GD carry both. Shot the perp with the 9 first and if it does not work shot them with the 45.

I agree with the OP 100%.
Plus, 9mm suppresses well, better than .45 or .40 (IMHO)

I've found the baby Glock (26) is pretty darn small and conceals very well. Thicker and heavier, but can not too heavy you can't do IWB or AIWB with even gym shorts.

But they do. They need to get hit a lot less with 155mm than they do with 9mm, 45, 5.56 or 7.62

I carry 9mm because it's damn tough to fit a 10+1 capacity .45ACP in Louisiana summertime attire without looking like you have a colostomy bag under your shirt.

OTOH, my 45s are accurate as shit and not particularly slow on split times either. I can clean off a plate rack faster with my Kimber than anything else.

Sometimes I carry 10mm because I might want get in a fight with a rhinocerous or earth-moving equipment

.45 for me

.
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 5:21:55 PM EST
20 9mm
8 .45
6 .357

It kinda works out the same.

I'm a moody bastard. Sometimes I carry a 9 because it says, "I want to kill you over and over" and sometimes I carry a 45 because it says, " Fuck you! I want you dead as soon as possible."

It kind of depends on how bad my hangover is and how my blood sugar is. Caffeine and nicotine also factor in.
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 5:30:13 PM EST
I like both. Why choose one?
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 5:32:52 PM EST
I carry a .40.

Because anything else would mean a new reloading setup.

This. I shoot a Wilson Combat 1911 better than any handgun. It is my all time favorite.

However, with good ammo, (Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Win Ranger), the 9mm is no slouch. There are definitely times when a LOT of rounds are important!
Link Posted: 1/18/2015 5:38:17 PM EST
It's always best to hit with the biggest round you can.

The key word is "you."
