8-10 minutes long, 3 main points

What organization would be interesting for a speech?
Also, if the group is based in the United States I can do the speech on them... as long as they were established outside the US.

Do something on that jug eared guy from Kenya everybodies been talking about.

The FARC in Colombia are interesting.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 2:43:36 PM EST
Do it on any of the fundamental ROP organizations and PLEASE make it VERY CLEAR to your audience EXACTLY why the ROPERS are terrorists.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 2:45:08 PM EST
Hamas is a good start.

Hizbollah would be another one. You could even conclude with a big zinger that because of how closely intertwined Quuds Force and Iranian govt money is with Hizbollah, that the whole of the Iranian Government and Revolutionary Guard are actually terrorist groups.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 2:47:23 PM EST
Sendero Luminoso in Peru were/are a quite interesting bunch
What about doing something on the real Che vs pop culture Che?
MILF because then you could say MILF a bunch of times in class
Hezbollah - quite interesting in that they have effectively made their own nation-state
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 2:48:11 PM EST
I say the Canadians. Anyone that talks like they do and live in that kind of cold has to be thinking of overthrowing our country. Either them or the people that work at Papa John's. They're all Italian terrorists right?
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 2:48:45 PM EST
It can be any organization, past or present.... and they dont have to be an enemy of the US either.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 2:53:01 PM EST

I'd say ACORN.

Oops, you did write foreign.

My bad.

Red Army Faction (German Marxists)
Al Queda (Duh)
Irish Republican Army (Marxists)
FARC (Marxists)
Tamil Tigers (Marxists)

The interesting thing is, Communists have been the most prolific terrorists in history...

Italy's Red Brigade could be a lot of fun, but the Shining Path probably takes the cake. Those guys were out there.

?
Were their factions of the IRA that were Marxist?
That'd be interesting for a paper, because I don't think a lot of people are aware of that.

Abu Sayyaf is another group operating in the Philippines.

MILF! Morro Islamic Liberation Front, based in Mindanao, Philippines.

ETA: Didn't even read the replies and I'm third with MILF.

Red Army Faction and the IRA are VERY interesting.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 6:38:35 PM EST
And the New People's Army - armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 6:39:05 PM EST
Tamil Tigers.....they just gave up and quit a while ago.

If it didn't have to be foreign, I would say The Weather Underground and link them to Obama at the end

The Provos were definitely socialists. I'm not aware they followed a Marxist ideology.

INLA, on the other hand, certainly was Marxist, and whatever remains of it is too.

(1) Irgun tsvai Leumi (Israel)
(2) Lehi (AKA the Stern Gang) Israel)
(3) Haganah (Israel)
(4) African National Congress (Republic of South Africa)
(5) Osbat al-Ansar (Lebanon)
(6) Muslim Brotherhood (transnat'l)
(7) People's Congress of Ichkeria and Dagestan/ Shamil Basayev (Chechnya, see: Beslan)
(8) Supreme Military Majlis ul-Shura of the United Mujahideen Forces of Caucasus
(9) Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation (Saudi Arabia, frmrly two branches in the USA)

1,2, and 3 are Israeli Jewish (now 'defunct' because, umm, they won) terror groups that don't get much press.

Despite 4s rosy reputation amongst the gala-going glitterati, it has been involved in assassinations and bombings.

5 and 6 are currently internationally influential Sunni fundamentalist groups.

7 and 8 are notable because they are opponents of Russia and were home to Shamil Basayev, who was responsible for the 2004 Beslan school massacre.

9 is interesting because they had two branches in the USA operating as charities.

The Algerians, FLN, they are one of the few terrorist groups that actually won against a determined opponent. Chased the French out of Algeria, caused the fall of the Fourth Republic, allowed the final rise to power of DeGaulle.

These may be the only terrorists that won, I can't think of any others. Some terrorists had the other side give up and pull out but these suckers won and it was one of the nastiest dirtiest wars on both sides ever fought.

Well,it sure took a hell of a lot of convincing for them to finally give up! The last of them finally got over-run in May or June of this year.

LTTE really pioneered the art of the suicide attack. They weren't the first but they took the banner of stupid and ran with it before it became cool for Islamist fundies to do it on a regular basis.

Yes...

The entire movement was traditionally socialist...

And there were some elements that were entirely Marxist...

The IRA was supported by the Soviets as a 'war of national liberation', just like the various other 'Liberation' organizations/movements worldwide, including the PLO (which was also a good deal socialist/marxist more than Islamist... Which is why you had the PLO, *and* Hezbollah/Hamas).

Basque seperatists.

Most of the ones I was going to mention have already been mentioned. But that's no surprise. Here they are anyway:

MILF
Sendero Luminoso
FARC
Ulster Defense Association
