My desk top won't let me past the "click on user name" screen. It will not load the user names . so I need to get into the boot hard drive and see if there is anything I need before I reinstall windows XP.

Thanks

what happens when you boot with the cd in your drive?

if it boots straight to windows, go into your BIOS setup and make sure cd-rom is bootable before hard drive.

it will lite the CD drive light, but then boots off the HD. If I put the Win XP disk in it will boot from it.

That's not how it's done. What software are you using? You need to open it with the burning software; it'll then burn it to be bootable.

Umm...you may have just booted from a Floppy.... or burned a bootable floppy as an image on a CD.

Nero, Alcohol and most other CD-Burning programs handle ISOs correctly. WinXP does NOT burn .iso as an image file. In the Windows XP and Windows 2003 resource kits there is a command-line cd burning application that will handle ISOs, but it is not for beginners.

Your right, Nero wants to burn a floppy boot Disk on the CD. Im really lost now.

To burn an image in Nero, go to file>burn image, then select the image file.

Beware, Knoppix fucked up the MBR on my Win 2000 machine.

If you don't know what you're doing, Knoppix probably isn't going to help you, or worse, let you break things more.

Proceed with caution.
