Lucky for me, I came into some money so now I can buy one. I will be "getting both" eventually but I can't decide which to get first:

Either a new M1 carbine, if so what would you recomend?
or one of the CMP Garands, which grade for the money?
I have about $500 to spend.

I have been on this WWII era gun kick ever since I watched the first episode of BoB. Which should I go for?

CMP Garand.. Go for a USGI Service grade.

I am kinda feeling the same bug. Go for the M1, they are sweet. I myself have been kinda thinking about a new G23, a pair would be cool, in a dual shoulder harness set up.

I was under the impression that the USGI Service grade Garands were no longer available...

I bought a New Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine last december, and I love it. The only gripes I have with it is I got one of the early ones (SN <1000) so It had one of the "Bad" bolts ,they replaced it for free, I only paid shipping to them. Also they originally shipped with a ventilated metal handguard and a birch stock. The handguard lets all the heat right on through, which kinda sucks, and the Birch stock scratches/ dents easily. They have switched it to a wood handguard now, and offer it in walnut too (I just ordered a stock set in walnut, should be here this week). Even with these 2 problems, I love it. NIW USGI 15 round mags are still availible for $10-15 each, as are used USGI 30 rounders (the crappy aftermarket ones didnt work for me, the retention studs werent big/ long enough to stay in the gun, they also fed very poorly during loading/ unloading).

I guess I didn't put enough sarcasm in that last post, huh.

What does the whole "throat erosion" and "muzzle wear" really mean? How long will a rifle last if it has a throat erosion of less than 5 or whatever it says?

Gonna have to swing sides to the M1 Carbine! Not an Auto-Ord. one either. Get a real deal 1940's GI one. .30 cal is just beyond fun to shoot.
