My McAfee subscription is about to expire, and I am looking for the best free anti-virus program.

I am somewhat familiar with AVG, but I am wondering if that is the best, or is there a better program out there?

Thanks!

Avast!

http://www.avast.com/

Better than AVG (though that is good too) by a small margin.

I use Avast.  I've never gotten a virus since I've been using it.  Can't say the same about McAfee.

I used to used AVG then I switch to AVIRA. it doesn't slow your computer down and the only down side is that it have pop up every now and then asking you to to buy the full version. but man, I really love this program.

Avast!

Avgfree is fine too, but I find avast catches more things.

AVG works best and I use it on 4 different pc's. Make sure windows firewall is configured along with windows defender and your all set. (Been running this configuration for over a year).

I've tried most of them..  The best free one I've used recently has been Avast!  I use Avast for the resident protection w/ Ad Aware & Malwarebyte's Antimalware to scan as needed.  I don't remember finding any that Avast! has missed so it seems to do a pretty good job.  None of them will work 100% if the user is an idiot & goes to places they shouldn't or if they open emails which are infected.

Another vote for AVAST here. It's done a good job for me.

Avast! or AVG will serve you well.

Many thanks for all the suggestions!  I am going to give Avast and AVG a try, and see which one I like.

Thanks again, everybody.

Avira AntiVir the best IMO
It is a lot lighter than avast and avg it increased my boot time ten-fold
There is a nag screen when you update but if you decide to go with it i can tell you how to stop it

Thanks.  Another poster recommended Avira, as well.  I will also give that a look.
