SB-600, SB-800 (if still available) or SB-900.

For just general use the SB-600 would probably suit you well.  It makes a huge difference, you will love it.

This.

Or look at it this way...$200~$325~$390.

There are Metz & other brands but I would go w/ Nikon.

I use the SB600 on my D80.  Fantastic flash for the money.  I love that I can set it on a tripod by itself and trigger the flash from the on camera flash.  I know all of the Nikon flashes do that, and probably others but it was a feature that I did not really know was there until I got it.

I'll probably go for the SB-600 as the 800 is a bit more pricey

I did find this link helpful:

SB-600 vs 800

thanks guys

I have both the SB 600 and 800. I use the SB 800 on my camera and set it to commander mode to fire the 600 (mounted on a light stand) as a fill.
The 800 is well worth the $$. The Sigma EF-500 DG Super is a good choice if you're on a budget. I also have one of these and have used it with good results.

I'm using the SB600 with my D80 and for my uses (general photography) it works great, in fact it is the best flash I've ever owned.

SB24 or SB28 off camera. Or put it on top the camera and use it in manual mode.
