One week ago I deactivated my facebook page after 13 years of being on it. I had one of the first "thefacebook.com" accounts in North Carolina, back when a college email was required to sign up. Doing my undergrad in Comp. Engr. meant I had access to a new "beta version" of social media that was better than "myspace" and required college email to be able to access.
FB has come a long way since that day, but reflecting back on it now, the floodgate of allowing anyone to register (over the age of 13, which didn't stop anyone) in 2006 was the seed that grew into the monstrosity it is today. What I joined was a networking site used to find jobs and colleagues. Now it is a cesspool of liberal hate and intolerance. I told my wife that *if* I ever return, my friend list will be cut by 2/3rds mainly because it is people I no longer talk to or see. I am not friends with anyone from the office, and honestly the one thing I miss is the private group that is made of parents in my daughter's school immersion program, and even then it is just our grade, no others. That group helps my wife and me to stay on top of school work, etc. for our daughter. But all in all, it has been a great week, and I don't miss the monster that is (IMO) circling the drain as far as social media is concerned. ARFCOM is now my only "social media" of any sort. |
ARFCOM is best social media
Fuck facebook, never had one and never will. |
I've still never had a page there. I honestly don't understand the desire to be that public with my life, even tough my wife and a few of my kids use it, they are really limited on it.
I don't use FB simply because I don't understand how it all works really. (Same with Twitter)
Back when my reserve unit was deployed the first time the command had us set up an account to keep track of family etc, last I checked I had thousands of friend requests from people I've never heard of. I have never posted a single thing to my timeline. There isn't even a picture. The only thing I can tell it's good for is my aunt sending dessert recipes to the entire world. |
I logged off two years ago and never logged back on. My life is better without it.

I have self control.
I can use Facebook to get the best out of it, for how it benefits me. I unfollow or unfriend whomever I want. I filter my feed to only see stuff I care about. If I feel like I am on it too much, I can take a week off whenever I like. I don't understand how someone who has been on it as long as you, cannot accomplish this, and feels the need to throw the baby out with the bathwater? Irrational fear or hatred of Facebook is akin to irrational fear of guns. |
I had a very brief stint on facebook. Just not interested enough in everyone's daily drama I guess...
I'm on Facebook a lot but most of my feed is local buy sell trade pages. Last week I was able to sell almost $1000 of stuff I wasn't using anymore. Cleaned out a nice spot in the garage in return! Our neighborhood has a page so we can keep up with local events, block parties, crime, and garage sales. Facebook has some good aspects but most of it is liberal garbage.
I will add that I think one day soon I will get rid of Facebook but in the mean time I just delete the people or pages that raise my blood pressure. |
Arfcom is a good social medium but not GREAT. The one thing it really needs is cascading responses and more notifications when people are talking directly to you. You know, like the liberal social media does lol. At least they got something right.
The key to facebook is to turn everyone's feeds off. Just post what you're interested in and ignore everyone else.

What does offend me is seeing threads in GD asking for help refuting someone's FB post/argument. |

So you deleted a social media account, but what about this week made it great?
There are plenty of studies that indicate having and using Facebook makes people less happy
I deleted mine years ago and couldn't be happier I still use it for business but no longer have a personal one |
I asked myself what kind of value it brought to my life.
It doesn't help you get laid It doesn't much help you get hired It doesn't help me keep in touch with people I care about It can prevent me from getting hired if I espouse a certain political leaning, hobby someone doesn't agree with. Filled with drinking pictures, maybe a potential employer doesn't like that. There's just too much to lose and not much to gain with that medium. It should ONLY be used as a marketing tool if you are engaged in it. I'd use it to help me make money, nothing else. |

View Quote I think you can separate FB users into three groups. There are the abnormal people (like me) who rarely post and joined to have some kind of direct E-connection to friends all over and see what's going on with them. There are the frequent posters who can be subdivided into the ones showing off their kids, the attention whores (the "just cooked supper, took a dump, getting ready for work" crowd), the drama lamas "I can't say why but I really need your prayers today", and the fight starters/shit stirrers. Then you get the political posters. All they do is post memes and links showing how brilliant their political ideology is. |

2006 member (also during the .edu glory days). I deactivated my account during a job search and enjoyed it enough that I never turned it back on.
I'm certainly not a Facebook phobe like many here and it has been a good tool for keeping up with old friends as I've moved around the country. However I certainly get what you mean about leaving it behind. |
I thought this was going to be a hot FFM threesome thread.
I haven't been on Facebook in months. I'm tempted to go on a rant there about Zuckerberg in hopes of getting the perma ban, but I haven't found the energy to do so. |
I remember the college email requirement in 2003.
I only keep social media now because it's my link to cool things to buy. |
I need to deactivate my account and create a new one only to stay in touch with the competitive shooting world.... That's it.
The juice isnt worth the squeeze IMO. I dont need to know more than the rare update about my family or a few friends and if its that important they call.
Never have, never will social media. DW facebook spy's on people so we know who to avoid at all costs.
I left because I was going through a divorce and didn't want the temptation of seeing what my cheating ex was doing.
I had some withdrawals but I really do not miss it and spend more time here with you fuckers. |
Honestly I have thought about ditching it as well. I rarely use it other than messaging. However I have two business Facebook pages and in this day and age I find it almost necessary much to my dismay that we have come to that.
I'm helping a good friend run for mayor and managing her candidate's Facebook page. After that, I'm out for the rest of 2017. My family has gotten very good about emailing pictures of each other now, and communicating with Facetime is just as good. My good friends and my shooting friends have a couple of MMS's going where we keep in touch with each other.
Honestly, I will miss posting sarcastic political shit and inappropriate memes, but I'll get over that in a few weeks. |

View Quote You can always make a new one to manage your business pages. Just make it an admin before deactivating your personal one. Facebook was cool when I was younger. Now it's just libtard politics, people spamming photos of their babies and kids, and people pretending to show off a life they don't actually live. |
I had control over it, over who I was friends with, saw, etc. My biggest issue was the time factor. I used messenger for work related stuff etc., instead of email. This is not the first time I have been off of it, but given the recent downhill spiral of it this time I will be off of it significantly longer. So this week has been great because of the time I got back, which I have filled with school work (working on a doctorate), but mostly family time and down time.
and no, I don't eat soy...but I do eat lots of fiber and protein.... |

What is this Facepage thingamajig? Never heard of it. Must be some new-fangled computer doo-hickey.

I have it for family and real friends. Its a great way to keep in touch when they are spread all over the world.

The number one reason today to have facebook and be friends with everyone you know is OPSEC. Facebook lets you know EXACTLY what everyone around you in the family, friends, co-workers are thinking and doing. Sure would be nice to know who the liberal nut bags are so you can plan accordingly when things go further south.
Easy example, say you and Jimmy at work are buddies and gun guys and you're at the water cooler talking guns like you always do and along walks Bob to chat. He's like you guys talking guns cool I like guns! Then proceeds to ask a bunch of questions. Sure would have been nice before you opened your mouth to see Bob's post on Facebook about how he's a militant liberal in secret and is bragging about how he's gonna SWAT a couple guys at work because fuck 2A! Extreme example but not out of the question. Use it like you are the NSA and you'll be miles ahead. |
on facebook it's much harder to be anonymous unlike on arfcom
My best week in 5 years was this week also.
Got rid of my lower back pain. It will short lived, this I am sure of. |
So FB started out with a college focus? That is a certain path to a shit show.
If you post a negative political or clickbait article on my feed, I simply unfollow. I actually find FB to be tolerable now.
I was off and on FB until 3 years ago. I've been FB free ever since 2013 and I am constantly reminded by my environment that I am much better off without it.
OP, the common is at $134ish today. Are you confident enough in your "circling the drain" comment to short the stock?
Just curious. Zuckerberg supposedly has his fingers in a lot of other ventures. He may be anticipating FBs demise. |
I have self control. I am not on it.
The irrational fear of not being on Facebook is akin to an irrational fear of going without drugs/alcohol. . |
I had 500 friends.
I culled it to 180. Then I unfollowed everybody except a few news sources (Matt Bracken, PJW, Milo). I'm much happier for it. |
