And it is the meaning and use of the word "respect".

Sane people understand that respect is a thing that is earned through actions or achievements.

Less than sane people believe that respect is due them for simply existing.

Does this make any sense? I'm more than a little drunk.

Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, much as I love their music and respect their talent, probably started this definition of "respect" in a certain segment of society.

Respectin' Michael Brown?

Why?

The respect thing is just a manifestation of the "entitlement" mentality.

Folks these days are taught to believe that life is easy and everything should be given to them, just cause.

The political ruling class exploits that to maintain in power, and too many are too self-absorbed to care that they do.

Respect my Authority

Certain professions demand respect, others not so much. If you are a soldier (or sailor etc) a cop or clergy than you likely have earned some amount of respect for the shit you have had to put up with relating to your job and morals. The Dindu and white trash class of people have not earned any respect in my opinion and I am not going to give them any. Not saying I would go out of my way to treat them differently than other types of people just that their actions and life choices don't get much admiration from me.

Yep. Notice that only special folks are deemed entitled to "respect".

A store owner who has worked hard to build a business in Ferguson: nope, no respect is due him.

But a thug who takes the store owner's merchandise---now there is a guy who deserves respect.

The concept of "fairness" falls into the same category.

"Respect" and "fairness" are nothing more than catchy buzzwords meant to appeal to folks who have a 5-second attention span.

I had a long discussion with a liberal self-proclaimed medical expert who said that the problem with Obamacare is it does not go far enough in providing expanded Medicaid to folks who cannot afford insurance.

Lord, give me the self-control to avoid such useless conversations.

People who feel that they deserve respect just because they breathe are often enraged if you somehow "disrespect" them.
