Oof.  Anyone dealt with this before?  I wish this was a case of a simple phone interview, but it's not.  I mean, there's nothing anyone can say, I know it's a gamble, I'm just interested in hearing about experiences.

I applied for a job in my field, 80 percent similar, at least, in another state.  The HR woman sent me an e-mail saying I'm qualified to take the test, which I suppose If pass it, then they MIGHT ask me to come back for an interview, then they MIGHT hire me.  The last two MIGHT not happen.  Then I suppose IF I got an interview, it almost certainly wouldn't be the next day, I might even have to fly back, say the NEXT week, then still MIGHT not get the job.

$350 flight.
Hotel room.
Long ass flights and airports.

For the chance.  Ugh.  Why can't they just do a phone interview.

depends on how shitty the job market is in your region and if you want to move.

Ive moved to different states twice without a job. Just packed up my shit and went.  I think that fact helped me become employed. They knew I was an ass kicker and that's what they were looking for.

Yes to both.  It's why I applied, and it's an area I want to move to.  I just hate being so uncertain about my chances with the hassle it'd take to go take a three hour test.

Kind of obnoxious they don't do a phone interview first. I just did two trips for interviews, luckily I got one.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. Is this standard for your industry?

Who dares, wins!

If you can afford it I'd say go. If you have to sell plasma and might not be able to pay rent next month then maybe not.

Is this a " Government type " of  job?

If it is you may need to call the the recruiter and ask is there is any way you can take the test locally. I used to work in HR for a local government agency and sometimes depending on the position I would arrange to have the test sent to the local city HR dept. You would have to do some leg to get a contact person .  They would have to agree to professionally proctor the test and return all materials.  It was really dependent on how specialized the position was and the personal feedback of the hosting HR Dept.  I did it about 7 times in 3 years. Our HR dept paid to Next day the test  both  sending and returning with all materials and a simple instruction sheet the proctor would read. After test everything went in a return package and dropped off in the next day Fed Ex bin.

Pretty simple really , but still one managed to mess up getting the test back to us.

In short call and ask.

They aren't paying for your travel? That's not a good sign.

I agree.  What field are we talking about exactly?

It is a government job, for an engineering position.

Very interesting.  I'm going to look into this, thanks for the suggestion.

Civil engineering and surveying for a county government.

I'm going to look into getting the test locally.  If that doesn't work, I'll end up going.

It's not much money in the scheme of things.   Just pay it and pretend it's a vacation.  Think positive and you'll get the job.  Use "The Secret"
