Last night, I got bored, so I decided to paint my Mauser. I took a photo, played with the levels in Paint Shop Pro, and wound up with a good model to base my outlines off. I then drew a couple sketches and transferred them to a piece of discarded basswood I had laying around. I built up multiple layers of acrylic, gouache, and art markers before finishing the whole thing with a few layers of gloss acrylic and Mod Podge. This is the final result. What do y'all think?

At first i was like

But then I was like

It looks pretty good, but I think you should have illustrated that the barrel and upper receiver are one piece

You scared me.  I thought you literally painted your C96. Whew!
Link Posted: 4/24/2013 4:06:00 PM EDT
I'm not a fan of pink but I think you did a good job. And despite my criticism the color choice makes it much more artistic and a lot less 'scary.'

I like!
Link Posted: 4/24/2013 4:09:00 PM EDT
how much?
Link Posted: 4/24/2013 4:09:04 PM EDT
I really want a shooter C96 in .30 Mauser.

I dig it.

I appreciate the feedback. Bright colors on recycled materials is kind of my schtick, as a working artist. I also happen to be pro-gun as hell, which comes as a great surprise to my peers in my line of work. But I'm glad you all enjoy this. I may do a 1911 next, or a Luger or something if I can get good enough pics to work from.

Here's two examples of other things I've done:

Did this the other night.

My favorite (and first of many) portrait.
Here.

I've been obsessed with the C96 and its variants since I was a little boy. I've had mine for about three years now and I love it. Broomhandles are just so aesthetically pleasing, like most early autoloaders.

I did that more for stylistic color balance than anything.

Dunno if it would fit in with all the dark earth and olive drab in my man cave

I would put that in the living room

Let the bidding commence!

Maybe I will post some of my young daughters paintings.

Sell it to some fruity art lover and profit!

You should do one of a 1911 and one more of a Luger and sell me all 3

Those are actually what I was planning on doing next. I have a 1911, but I'll need to get some hi-res pics of a Luger to use as a source. And I'll need to find more wood..

What kind of resolution do you need?

Is there something wrong with canvas?
AC Moore sells multipacks of budget canvas like $2ea, depending on size...

I think it would look nicer, if nothing else.

I have nothing against canvas, really. I've just favored wood I find laying around lately because it's free (people donate to me by the truckload) and the way it behaves when you paint on it is very appealing to me. Canvas is a bit to mushy for the way I handle a brush. It's kind of hard to explain.

The sharper and larger, the better. Just something I can use to get a good idea of the lines of the gun.
