So, if a head injury results in loss of sense of smell, which bone could have been damaged? I am thinking it is the Cribriform plate. Am I right?
I realize I will get a massive response of goofball answers (some undoubtedly using the word "goofball"), but maybe I will get lucky. Thanks And no, this is not cheating. |

Ethmoid bone I think. No offense, but I need a definite. But I do appreciate the response. |

Ethmoid bone I think. Yes, the cribriform plate shears off the nerves for smell. |

it has to damage the olifactory nerves on the roof of the sinuses.

|
CI (olfactory nerve) passes through the cribbiform plate which is part of the Ethmoid bone.

As has been established, the ethmoid severs the nerve connection between the nasal cavity and the brain.
However, in light of this being posted in GD, the answer is obvious: dikfer/possum. |
|
Cribiform plate of the ethmoid.
Olfactory bulb sits on top and drops nerves through the plate to the roof of the nasal cavity. |

I consulted my neuropathologist friend. Answers above are correct. Her response: "Ethmoid bone. More specifically the cribriform plate." -p. |

Couldn't it have just been soft tissue swelling that compromised the nerve? |

On a serious note.
It is not damage to a "bone" which causes one to loose the sense of smell. Loosing the sense of smell is the result of a frontal lobe concussion. Been there, had that. |

I just figured that you could lose the sensory function from having cerebral edema that impinges the nerve against bony structure. I would have to ask 1. How long has the nerve been "out"? 2. What was the mech of injury etc? If my question is stupid I have a good excuse....."hi, My Name is Evan Williams and I am from the Anesthesia Dept.!!!". |

Ah yes, I could just sense the hotness. A scintillation of loveliness. Thank you for not requiring me to overhaul and recalibrate my sensors- a tedious depot level procedure. |
