Well its new to me.  Its a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix.  It has 53K miles on it, I paid $2,000 for it.  I think I did well.  The car does not drive as smoothly as my Cutlass, or as quietly.  It also isn't as big [for me and my long legged kids] but over all its a nice car.  It has a little more zip than I need.

Are you sure its only 53K?  14 yrs old, 153K sounds more likely.

Positive.  Its in excellent condition.  The car was owned by a Grandma that parked it in her garage.  My husband is a mechanic and believe you me, he checked it out.

That's a good buy. They are generally good cars, and the plus side is when they do break they're not insane on parts and lots of people can work on them.

Good Tip!

swingset my husband can work on it.  He said the same thing.  However he also said that he'd have to pull the engine to do too much.  Evidently its shoved in pretty tight.

That's a common problem, almost any modern sedan with cab-forward design has the engine pretty much crammed in as an afterthought. I've seen some insane layouts that required removal of dashboards and motor mounts for common maintenance. Ugh.

My wife has a 95 GTP with the 3.4 DOHC engine... your husband probably already knows this, but if yours is the same engine, then when/if it ever needs an alternator you should take a weekend vacation so you don't have to witness the tool-throwing and profanity.

ETA: I keep saying 3.1 when it's really a 3.4

Patty the only problem with cars that have low mileage and are old are going to be the soft parts.

You might want to have your husband replace the hoses and belts.  Check the tires for dry rot.

Also a change of all the fluids might make it run a little smoother.

But thats a pretty nice car for the price.

I'm glad your husband checked it out, I was just going to ask you if your mechanic checked it out before you bought it.

ETA: What motor do you have? 3.4 dohc?

David's already left for work so I can only tell you what it says on the car.  Its a 24 valve, V6 3.4 Pontiac Grand Prix.

David said that in order to change "Blah Blah" [I did pay attention but evidently that information didn't stick to any of my memory] that he'd have to pull the engine.

He is going to give it a tune up as soon as I have a little more money [things are pretty tight financially right now].  It does need need tires on the front, the back seem fine.

Its a cute car.  Patty

Oops, I meant 3.4 in the earlier post.  The only other issue we've had with ours is they are kind of well known for intake gasket leaks.  Happened on ours at about 90K.  Another PITA to change.  I have a GM-certified tech for a friend, and in his shop on the weekend, it took the two of us about 9 hours to change them (but we put a new timing belt on at the same time).  I really enjoy driving the car, and even 12 years later I like the looks.

The gasket is what David was talking about when he said he'd have to pull the engine.  The service engine light comes on intermittenly so David is going to have a friend hook it up to his computer.

You can do the intake gaskets without pulling the engine, but it just takes a lot of time because there's a lot of ^&$%(  in the way.  If it's lighting the CE light but it isn't staying on, he should still be able to find it with a scanner.  The general symptoms of the gasket on this engine is: upon cold start, it idles up high (about 3K or so), then falls slowly to BELOW normal idle, to the point where it chugs and barely stays running.  Then it jumps up again, repeat ad nauseum.  This happens until it's warm.  Hopefully yours are fine (even though in the grand scheme of things, $20 in parts and a days work aren't all that bad).
