Okay so a room costs 30 dollars at a hotel, and 3 guys pay 10 dollars each for the room.  The woman at the desk realizes the room is only 25 dollars so she tells a bell hop to take 5 dollars back to their room and give it to them.  He can't figure out a way to divide 5 dollars amongst 3 men so he takes 2 and puts it in his pocket and gives each of the men 1 dollar.  That means each of the men paid 9 dollars for the room.  9x3=27 dollars, plus the 2 dollars the bell hop kept equals 29 dollars.....where did the extra dollar go?

Because @ $25 / 3 = 8.33333
+ 1 dollar back = 9.333333

9.33333 * 3 = $28 + $2 in bellhops pocket = $30

hope that helps.

$25 for room + $2 in pocket + $3 returned = $30

25 in the till + 2 in the bellhop's pocket + 3 back to the men = 30

$30 total - minus two for the bellhops pocket = $28 paid, not 27.   They are tricking you by making you take the three dollars away from the total instead of two.

My dad used to tell that one. I'd almost forgotten it.

Thanks for the memory.

The other way to look at it is like this:

Each man paid 9 * 3 = 27

room was 25

27-25=2  (which is in the bellhop's pocket)

Total cost to the men = 25 for the room + 2 that the bellhop takes = 27

3 guys in a $25/night hotel room? I don't like the way this sounds - not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's a play on words .

It should read $25 for the room and a $5 refund spit
among 4 people , with three getting $1 each and the
other getting $2 for a total of $30 .

Here's a hint, you can't divide 25 by 3 and have a whole number.

The statement that each man paid 9 dollars for the room is false.
Each man only paid $8.3333 for the $25 dollar room. The "missing" dollar is included in the bellhop's $2.00

Next time they should have stayed at a NRA participating motel...they would have saved a few bucks and not deal with any of this.

Eacg man paid $10 for the room cause it was miss priced at $30. Bell hop was to bring $5 back. It is a miss play on words, but they did pay the $10 each to begine with, its says so.

Holy Cow!

This is something that stumped my 5th Grade Teacher!

A couple of years later I had another Teacher that explained how it works:

Simplified for DUm-DUm's Trolling here:

$25 for the room.
Of the $5 remaining, one to each man; that is $26, $27, and $28.
And $2 for the Bell Hop for $29 and $30!

The $25 that was supposed to be charged doesn't matter.  The real amount is the $30 paid minus the 2 dollars taken by the bellboy.

10 x 3 =  $30.00        Total paid by 3 guys

30 - 2 =  $28.00        Total minus the $2 the bellboy took

28/3 =  $9.33 1/3       Total paid divided by 3 is amount each renter actually paid

How to check the math:

2/3 = .66 2/3      $2.00 divided by three:  amount bellboy took from each guy as a "tip"

10.00 - .66 2/3 = 9.33 1/3      Amount each paid minus (1/3 of $2.00) amount taken by bellboy.

$9.33 1/3      Amount each paid. Check.

Another way to look at it:

Bill is $25.00

25/3 =  $8.33 1/3      amount each owes on $25.00 bill.

10.00 -  8.33 1/3 =  $1.66 2/3      amount remaining from the $10 each already paid

1.66 2/3 - 1.00 =  $ .66 2/3      (or 1/3 of $2.00) the amount taken from each by the bellboy.

8.33 1/3 + .66 2/3 =  $9      Plus amount taken by busboy.

10.00 - 9.0 =  $1.00         Amount refunded to each.

Edited to add the blue and change the last 2 lines.

Yeah, that's the part of the story that creeps me out. I'm sure that at some point during the night, out of the still darkness, a lonely voice was heard to say, "OK. My turn."

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
