I brought home a Visio 42" LCD this week so the rug rat can get his Word Girl fix.  For the money it has a great picture.  The Blu-Ray player with apps makes it hady for Pandora and Netflix.  We get our programming from OTA antenna.

My problem is that when the commercials come on the fucking volume gets so god damn fucking obscenely loud that you can no longer think straight and are forced into either muting it or shooting it.

There has to be a work around to this.  When I had DirecTV, the commercials got slightly louder, but this is outfuckingrageous.  How do I apply technology to beat the marketers from making me deaf? Halp.

I think I can help. Tell me what your screen says when you hit the menu button.

One of the first TV's I owned was a Phillips/Magnavox that had a feature called Smart Sound.  Turn it on, and everything came out of the speakers at the same volume level.  Haven't seen that feature on any TV since, which sucks.

On Vizios he needs to look for the DRC selection and turn it on. That should help to raise the lows and lower the highs. Should alleviate the problem.

My Ps have the same problem with their Vizio.  They hate it and wish for the old Magnavox with SmartSound.  My 42" Magnavox LCD kicks ass.   BTW, got it new for $450 plus tax.  Has the SmartSound too.

I had the same problem with our Vizio.  We tried every trick suggested online, gave up and exchanged it for a different tv.

My older VISIO has a nighttime function under the sound menu, this keeps the peaks down.

The trick the commercials use is that the peak volume is not any louder than the show, it is just the sound is at peak volume the whole time, think explosion during a movie.

If you have FIOS your set-top box has a built in envelope filter that can be set to equalize the volume.
Depending on what service you have, or even the TV itself, you may have the same functionality.
