Very simple.
IBM was certain that healthcare costs were going up. So they dumped the employees. Now the employees have the liability for the higher healthcare costs, not IBM. |

Talked to an HR lady at work and she did not believe me that the Affordable Care Act is going to greatly impact healthcare coverage for our company and most other companies in a very negative way because she deals with our benefits all the time and she has not heard about any changes. Note she just explains benefits and enters people into the system and doesn't deal with negotiating our contract/account with our provider in anyway but somehow knows nothing is going to happen despite the president of the company telling me that we were going to be negatively impacted by it and was evasive when I asked about it.

They've been pulling this crap more than a decade and this sort of thing was the reason my dad participated in the mass exodus in the late '90s. Get him started and you can get a good half hour of ranting about how the company told everyone yeah, they got paid less than the competition but the benefits made up for it, and then started pulling benefits from folks.

I worked two years for IBM. They're always looking for a way to screw over their workers/retirees. The latest one I heard was they changed the 401k contribution to once a year so they could lay people off before hand and not have to contribute to their 401k for the year. They stopped releasing their percentage of US/Offshore works since it shows their steady march to push everything offshore. They have a practice call "laser layoffs" where each year they lay people off in each state just lower than the state notification numbers so it doesn't get press. Obama care sucks, but don't be deceived that IBM is a good company. View Quote All true. They have become very militant and heartless. Soon it won't be a US problem anymore. Actually my retirement insurance is like IBM will be doing and it is not bad.
At age 65 my regular insurance came to an end. I was required to sign up for Medicare and then got a monthly stipend to take care of a supplement to Medicare. I think that is the same thing IBM proposes to do. I have no deductions or co payments because the Untied Heathcare supplement. My yearly cost actually decreased substantially when we went to this system. Nowadays my wife and I combined spend less than $3K a year for medical and prescriptions and that is with $2400 being taken out of SS to cover the Medicare portion. |

The move, which will affect all IBM retirees once they become eligible for Medicare, will relieve the technology company of the responsibility of managing retirement health-care benefits. Obamacare could turn the table in time for gov't to dictate pricing. Bad for the doctors, HMO executives. Which is part of the problem. Why do you think the older doctors are leaving in droves and that a lot of practices are turning to cash-only? Think about that. It's because these doctors do not eventually want to become slaves to the government, and do not eventually want to work for one client, that client being the government, and the government not paying. So plan your retirement all you want, your government is going to fuck you. I think that is absolutely horrible. If someone has served, that person and their spouse should have TRICARE until they die. They earned it. Why is that such a hard concept?? Service member, yes. Dependant/dependants, no.
