I won a free copy of XP pro and I want to do a fresh install on my computer.
How can I save all the stuff I need to save and what all do I need to save?
Do I need to save any Hotmail, MSN messenger or Yahoo stuff or is that all on their servers?
I have two HDs so I can shift basic files to my other HD. How do I make sure they shift over virus and disease free?
What about all the hardware changes I've done/installed since new? Will XP recognize all that stuff?

Any help here would be appreciated I'd like to do this without screwing it up.

save all your passwords, bookmarks, data files, pr0n, digital camera pics, etc to the second harddisk,  install fresh XP, reinstall all the programs again from scratch like Firefox, your anti-virus, etc.  Might be worth taking screen shots what's on your original computer in case you forget what programs you used to have.

If you have a copy of Symatec ghost, drive image your drive C: and store to your second harddisk beforehand.

You might have to download device drivers for specific machine all over again for it's unique hardware.

what are the programs you use the most.

anytype of internet related programs like hotmail, yahoo, all that data is stored on there servers.  so you dont have to back that up.  all you have to know is your username and password.  that is why you can check your email from any computer. and the same info is there (it is stored on their servers)

if you use quicken, money, peachtree   you should run the backup utility in the prgram and it will make a couple files you need to backup to an external source.

if you have pictures and word documents all you have to do is copy them to that second harddrive(as long as it is physically a different HD and not a partioned HD)

remember before you reinstall windows make sure you have all your original cd's for all of your software.  because you will need to reload those once you format and reinstall.

let us know if we can be of any help

How do I move all of my stuff in Outlook to the other HD?

When I do the install, can I customize it from the CD? What all is in XP?

In outlook you need to Archive your emails. Set the date to sometime in the future and it will archive everything. Make sure you set the path to a location you know and can access. The archived file have a .pst extension.

to backup outlook:   open outlook   click on file  then click import and export , then click export to a file.   scrool down and select personal folder file (pst). click next.

this next part is critical   make sure you select  personal folders at the top of this window, then down at the bottom select  include subfolders.

the next window allows you to save or info as a file.   Select  browse and save it to somewhere you will remember, the desktop is perhaps the best spot.  If it pops up ask for encryption , you don't want to use it.

copy this pst file to a cd or to your second harddrive for your backup

Me I guess. I got it done anyway. I found the file in program files and copied it and pasted it in a new folder on my F drive. Will that worked? When I click on that file it opens OLE and the mailbox is there.

I  don't even use my ISP's email, I have an account on google, yahoo, and hotmail.  If you change your ISP you'll lose your ISP email, but not the web based email, now might be a good time to wean yourself off of it.  I got 50 Google invites if you need one.

Yahoo mail allows you to add other POP3 mail servers (like from your ISP) to your account as well.

Any tips? Is this going to be easy or should I expect some headaches?
Should I reformat or wipe this drive clean somehow?

Every computer has a model number on it.   if its a dell it has a service tag.  anyways go to the manufactors web page download all the driver's for the computer and move them over to your secondary drive.  you will need:

video card
sound card
network card
modem
chipset driver possibly

maybe a few more depending on your system

with out the drivers your computer is worthless.

then make sure you have your data backed up.  load that new cd you have in the drive restart the computer.  it should boot off the cd if it doesn't you might have to change the boot order in the bios!
then once it loads make sure you do the clean install, then delete all partitions on the c: drive.  format the drive and it will start the install process

Went to HP's site and they are useless, all I can really do is order a recovery CD for 12 bucks. They're own diagnostic program cant even find my computer.

I have a video card so I have the cd for that.
Dont have a network card.
Dont use the modem but have a disc for it.
I have onboard sound but I'm willing to chance that I dont have sound and deal with it after.

Should I go for it?

whoa whoa whoa

why didn't you ask me?

If you have two hard drives, just copy all of your stuff to one of them, pull that one out, install XP on the other one, once it is up and running install the first one and copy over the stuff you need.

You could also buy a ~$100 hard drive, install it and do a totally fresh install and then copy the stuff off both your hard drives as you need it.

We can talk more in depth if you want, just send me email.
