In my industry, things slow down quite a bit as soon as the kids are out of school.

Going to work is like a vacation sometimes. That's when office clean up and infrastructure build out happens... but at a relaxed pace.

As soon as kids are back, then all the people making decisions are back too and it gets busy again.

(This is due to mandatory vacation laws causing all the vacation time of executives to happen during the summer so they can take their kids. Nothing to do with actual schools.)

I take actual vacation in winter, and have lots of flexible hours in the summer.

So probably a total of four or five days during the summer is actual vacation time off work.

Used to take 3-4 weeks. I once took 5 weeks in a row but that was too much, I didn't want to go back.

This year is the first year in awhile that I haven't been too busy. I like it! I'm a speaker and generally present to hourly folks. When I first started, companies would want to make sure as many people would be able to attend as possible. So when vacation loads were high, I didn't work. The past few years I have been speaking to more and more professional groups and traveling a few times a month in the summer.

I like slow summers better.

I usually take 10 days ,a week in August and then make 4 or 5 long weekend as well.

I take the rest of my vacation throughout the year

I'm taking a full week off in the middle of July for the first time.... Ever, I think. My company has a weird vacation schedule that builds time off as I work, starting on January 1. I now have a full week available, so I'm taking it. The end of the year will have another week available, so I'll break it up over Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks, using days to fill in the partial working week, and just stay gone the whole time.
My 76 year old parents have a home improvement project hey want help with, and they're paying me in food and cash, so that's how I'll be spending my week off. I'm too broke to do anything exotic, but I'm a good boy, so helping out old people is its own reward. That, and mom is still an excellent cook.

I have 2 weeks worth of vacation time I need to use or else I lose it come September first.

So it looks like I'm taking two weeks worth over the next couple months.

I tried to take a week this summer and could only get two days
edit:
since the thread has turned into a discussion of overall benefit packages, I get:
vacation amount per year based on seniority.
I forget if it is 3 wks or more per year but at 27 years I am maxed out
12 holidays
5 personal days
You can accrue up to two years worth of the above before you stop accruing
Right now I am about maxed out, and am not only because I've been leaving work a couple hours early on slow days and burning benefit time to do so
Otherwise I wouldn't be using any

Based on everyone's responses, we as Americans are working too hard.
It is great to be productive, but taking time off to smell the flowers and reset your lives a bit doesn't make you FSA.

Since my wife is a teacher, and her summer ends mid July, we party hard from June 1 till then.

I can accrue a max of 96 hours and work 12 hour shifts, one week I only work Wednesday and Thursday and the next those are my only days off. Adds up to 84 hours a pay period for those who are math challenged. We accrue roughly 8 hours a month.

If I take two days every three months, I get four full weeks off a year... plus the other 22 weeks left that I have five days off out of seven

I get 4 weeks vacation every year, but I don't take them at any specific time. I'm more likely to take vacation time in the Spring and Fall, since I don't even want to go outdoors in the Summer.

I get 18 days of vacation each year not including the holidays and take 15 days during what we consider summer.

I try and keep a few days just in case and end up using them for a range day in the spring.

I work a 24/48 and get 11 vacation days, 8 holidays (you pick the day), and 16-18 Kelly days (scheduled days off to keep under 56 hours/week) per year.
Took 2 vacation days around a scheduled Kelly day so 11 days over the Fourth of July.
A bunch of vacation days, 2 holidays and a Kelly day will give me 07/29-08/21 off later in July and August.
2vacation days and a Kelly in early September too.

When I was hired, we worked a 4x4. 4 days on and 4 off. Summer vacation was 4 periods - 28 days off in a row. To accommodate everyone, Summer vacation scheduling started March 01 and ran through 10/31. My first year Summer vacation was March 02-March 30. We had a March blizzard that year, and the State was shut down for 3 days during my SUMMER vacation.

During the summer, none. I get four weeks vacation, but it's awarded by seniority, and at 14 years, I'm still in the bottom 20%. So my vacation is usually in October, or Feb-April. I can manage to get a few five or six day blocks of days off during the summer, however.

I haven"t had a vacation in over a year

I'm borderline thinking about booking a cruise, interior cabin (no windows), and just eating at the buffet and sleeping the entire time. The Royal Caribbean cruise I went on had a great buffet, so good in fact we quit going to the dining room (which was marginal).

Same here. Summer off with my kids, camping, off roading, and catch up on house work. Bought the kids a mini RAZR, building a tubed out sidekick for the wife, and just picked up new kayaks for the whole fam. Let the fun begin!!!

I don't take anything more than a day at a time generally or else it just means more work when I come back that I will have to catch up on. "Vacation time" isn't really accurate for me since I could be dying and still get a phone call/e-mail/text asking me for something. If I want to be left alone I have to leave my phone (which is personally owned) at the house and leave town.
