Lets see...

We kill 1 million babies each year and believe it is okay.

We support gay rights and let pediphiles out of prison.

Vincent Fox can insult blacks and mexicans and gets away with it.

Bush nominates blacks and mexicans for judges and gets called a racists.

The News media believe the word of our enemy over the word of our own Generals.

The Koran is considered a sacred book by the media while the Bible is the root of all eveil.

And finall, here during the war on terrorism the Catholic Church STILL is given a hard time over the autrasities of the Crusades when if we would have succeeded then there WOULD be none islamic terrorist threat today because we were fighting MUSLIMS

So I would say we are pretty close.

TEOTWATKI occured for the Mayans a long time ago. Their calendar was wrong for them.

My guess is 2 - 50 years. Short end is WWWIII with Muslims that we will win but the economic toll and upsetting of the oil supply will change the world. On the long end oil problems and/or balkanization.  Any economic shock could change the US rapidly.

On a side note: I have often associated weight gain with stress. People eat more when they are stressed. Therefore, your body fat is an indicator of how well you are doing with the stressors of your environment. Everyone around (except the counter examples that prove the point) is getting fat. Perhaps our innate desire to gain weight when stressed is telling us something. Do all those people have a gloomy outlook on the future of food supplies?

Excellent point, although I really think we're all getting fat because we eat processed food, are rich enough to be able to do so, and no longer really work in a physical fashion for our incomes.

I give the U.S. five years before our extreme regional differences tears up the country as we know it into Socialist CanMerica (Kali, the Northeast, and all Canada), and the United States a' Texas (red states only, please).

All of the fruity left-leaners will want to depart to their idiotic soclialist meccas in urban areas, likening themselves incorrectly to Jews escaping Nazi Germany before Hitler hauled them away.

Sad.

I Think that we have been doing pretty good,

we have been to the brink of destruction (WWI, WWII)

and prevailed, then we have little to worry about.

One terrorist attack on american soil and everyone is predicting the end-times?

remember the Y2k bug where the computers were going to kill everyone?

Bunch of hand wringing sissies.

Remember that the rome empire lived on after it collapsed for longer then america has been around.

Don't be a mexicant

Sounds a little too soon. I don't think it'll be in my lifetime and I have doubts it'd be in my son's, but it's hard to say. We live in a faster paced world/society than the Roman's did. It took the Roman Empire, what, a thousand years to final omplode? I'd say there's gotta be some sort of math you can do to get a somewhat accurate prediction... but it sure as hell ain't gonna be found on here. Everyone in this forum would probably cheer on a collapse because it'd mean the oppptunity to reinvent our society into somethign better than it is today... one with more guns of course.

Society collapse in what meaning? Thinking Mad Max?

I think we are seeing changes as we have always seen. There were people paranoid and scared during WWII, Cold War, all through time.

I think short of widescale nuclear was, its gonna be a while, as the cesspool turns.

The best thing we could do now to prevent the disaster some of you envision is to wrest some of the power our government has taken away from them. The socialist agenda and gov't intrusion right here in the United States are probably the greatest threat to individual rights, social justice and world peace that there is right now.
I am amazed that so few realize this but I guess it is like comparing a chess novice to a grand master. One sees only the move in front of him, maybe 2 or 3, the other sees the entire game with all of it's possibilities.

If we're talking "Western" civilization, we're eroding it as we speak. Western civilization as we know it is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition born out of the remnants of the Roman Empire, The Roman Catholic Church.  Like it or not, the very fabric of western culture is made of the remnants of what was in place 1500 years ago.  With society today attacking that foundation - life (abortion and assisted suicide murder), family (divorce, homosexuality), and the very ideals that the influence of the Church helped instill in all of our modern govermental bases are  being attacked and eroded on a daily basis.  Once again I have to agree with Sgtar15 and cite the same examples as to why western civilization as we know it is going to disappear sometime within the next few generations unless something is done.  That's not to say that the geographic west will cease to exist, but the values that (most) of us hold dear will have changed

As long as we keep advancing as we have, this Republic could easily outlast Rome.

The Roman Republic lasted for 500 years, ours is only 218.

While some people here get their rocks off thinking about anarchy, there is no REAL sign that it is even close.

The only thing happening now is the last glorious moment of a old cultural order,  taking advantage of a new order that had been so successful for so long that it had gotten detached from reality.  Unrealistic socialist utopian dreams are facing a reality check, but theocracy and autocracy of the 19th century are not going to make a comeback.
