I'm considering taking up a martial art and I'm curious what "typical" monthly rates are for martial arts instruction.

I used to pay $40 a month for Combat Ju Jitsu. Best thing I've ever spent any money on. But I probably wouldn't expect to find anything in that price range anymore. My Sensei taught because it was his passion. It wasn't a business. I was lucky.

Sounds like the $100/month at the school I'm looking at isn't overly expensive..

Thanks!

A reasonable monthly fee all depends on how many classes you can take a week, what other resources are availalbe at the instruction site (other martial arts, weights, cardio equipment) and the rank and capability of your instructor(s).

Many gyms now offer several forms such as BJJ, MT, boxing, etc unlimited for one price. You can find some gyms like this for around 130-150 month.

My gym is a literally huge gym that has marital arts on the side. Strictly for marital arts only I pay $32/month for one class a week that is expanding to two per week. So that works out to $4/class at 2 classes a week. That is plenty for me since I spend most of my time with weights or cardio.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do!

I switch my forms ever couple years to get a broad variety.  Last year i did Krav Maga, was about $110/month

This year i'm gonna do some BJJ and Muay Thai.  Hopefully this will be free as the guy seems willing to trade for firearms instruction.

In the process of setting up a studio in my friends basement.  Should be able to do our own stuff down there.  Once you have a skills set this is probably the best bet.

Judo - $40/mo for 3 classes/wk (plus occassional Saturday) - no contract.  Excellent instructor.  (Woody Bostic ~30 years experience).

A local MMA instructor is $50/mo, but I wasn't impressed with his teaching quality.

One BJJ school is $65/mo for 5 classes/wk, and the quality seemed good, but they wanted 1-year contracts.

screw contracts.  Makes it impossible for me to train at college with someone who has contracts.  Every time i go on break i get screwed.

My instructor charges $120 for 3 months of Tae Kwon Do with a $35 test fee.  two one hour classes per week minimum.  As a Black Belt I don't pay anymore but I am expected to help instruct.  I don't like instructing, I like doing.  Last year I told him I wasn't going to instruct the kids anymore just the adult classes.
I think the second dan test will be about $550.
