I've seen and read many times of people who have a few guns they refer to them as a "collection".

To me a collection would start at 5 or more.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 9:40:07 AM EST
To me more than 1.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 9:40:56 AM EST
I would say as soon as you own more than one gun that fulfills the same role.

Two handguns, two shotguns, etc etc.

100 - If it ain't into 3 digits, it ain't a "collection."

An old-timer gun enthusiast I knew had a different standard. He always said, "If you don't have at least one for every year you've been on this earth, you shouldn't consider yourself a "collector"..."

I like my standard better.

I hold my nose up at your defined amount.

Seriously, it kind of depends. If you have one each: CCW gun, target gun, hunting shotgun and clays shotgun, that desn't seem like a collection.

If you have different collective branches of your guns, like "The C&R's", "The AR's", "The Commies" , "The CCW's", "The Target Guns", you are there.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 9:46:17 AM EST
I think the ARFCOM answer is 2, a .38 and a 10-22 will make you a collector

My answer is what ever number of guns it was that I lost in a tragic boating accident...
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 9:46:28 AM EST
I've often wondered that myself.

Although my pre-boat accident roster of firearms was quite large, I never considered it a collection 'cause so few could be considered collectable. And there was no "theme" to my cache of arms. No "rifles of American wars" or "cowboy" firearms. Just a bunch of assorted guns.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 9:47:08 AM EST
Didn't ya'll read the Handgun control thread? Over 1 is an "Arsenal."
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 9:51:24 AM EST
Would this be a collection?

I like to call it my assortment.

You have a 10/22 so you are halfway there.

I'd say 2, as long as they were collectible. I have a lot of guns, but none of them are collectible.

Just because I buy 100 stamps and put them in my desk drawer, I do not have a stamp collection.

Whatever amount the MSM will call it a stockpile not a collection.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 1:28:15 PM EST
2 or more

its plural and you can carry one in each hand
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 1:31:30 PM EST
1 for every year of life.

I think it depends a lot on why you buy them.
If you buy/build guns that you dont need but just want to have because they're neat or different or cool or old or rare, then you are collecting.
Most of my guns fall in those categories so I would think I collect guns, ergo I have a collection.
A few are dedicated to the self defence role.

So, one EBR and a couple of mags is now a collection?
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 1:47:02 PM EST
Is this a collection?

Here are the CMP Greeks

Here are the "sproting arms"

And the pistols

Well, I know this is a beginner collection, but I am only 25 so it will do for now.

More politically correct as well versus using terms like "Armory".

Underwater Bump

Let's see some more "collection" examples
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 3:56:25 PM EST
I'm too poor to own a collection
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 3:57:34 PM EST
in excess of 20
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 4:07:51 PM EST
I prefer ARSENAL.

Link Posted: 3/16/2005 4:09:25 PM EST
Depends where you're from. In Massachusetts, it doesn't take much for the news media to declare an Arsenal.

Link Posted: 3/16/2005 4:25:01 PM EST
How many for a "cache"?

When you lose count of the number, or you look at the group and just count "pretty many". Also when you find guns you forgot about, especially after you just bought one like it to fill the gap.

I use "accumulation," as that implies I don't have to be too neat.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 4:58:55 PM EST
As soon as redundancy in terms of practicality comes into play.

Such as...having an AR and a AK. Basically redundant. The start of a collection.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 5:00:14 PM EST
*if you own 1 - 5 guns your a beginner gun collector

*10 - 16 guns is average

*20 plus is more advanced

*50 + is old timer

The law in canada is 10 or more firearms makes you a collector !
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 7:48:16 PM EST
7 handguns, 3 shottys, 11 rifles.

Do I qualify?
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 7:56:55 PM EST
61 as of yesterday, I too prefer the term arsenal
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 7:59:35 PM EST
I've never been interested in having a collection. Collections are for collectors.

I want an arsenal. Liberal asshats and impending tragic boating accidents seem to threaten the status of my arsenal every day.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 8:04:26 PM EST
I have a C&R so technically I am a "collector" I prefer to think of my self as an enthusuiast, or crazy guy with guns.

Here are some pics I took last night

this one is under construction still. should be done by this weekend.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 8:05:41 PM EST
If gun number is >2, then it is a collection.
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 8:06:39 PM EST
Well if you live in NY and you own any thing more than 1 I guess its not a collection.

"It goes well beyond a collection. Maybe an obsession." Wilutis said Nager could have been ready "to fight a war."

Link Posted: 3/16/2005 8:13:59 PM EST
When you have enough to arm everyone in your household and both your neighbors households. That is a "arsenal"
Link Posted: 3/16/2005 8:14:12 PM EST
Well by most of the standards listed, I guess I have a collection. Of course, I just had a birthday this past Monday, so I'll need to add another one to the group for that reason.....

+1 A couple of years ago I was thinking about buying a .22 for smallbore silhouette. After thinking about options for a couple of weeks I found a Remington 581in the back of the safe.

Can I get a judge's ruling on this?

Ok the Romak and the M-44 are shown twice, but I have a 10/22 that I don't have a pic of.
