Depending on the state that you live in you may own or build none to a million. Democratic states are pretty easy going on ownership. The communist controled states let you own none!

What you can NOT do, however, is MAKE, SELL, or ASSEMBLE FOR SALE guns without an appropriate Federal Firearms License. You can sell items from your personal collection, but you can't, say, buy 10 stripped lowers, build them into guns, and sell them. ATF would consider that being a dealer or manufacturer, and therefore in need of an FFL.
