It took me three weeks, wrap your rib cage and restrict heavy breathing and your lungs expanding, this will help.
That is how I was back in action in three weeks.
I know the pain, my condolences.

Ditto on the 3-4 weeks.  Avoiding the deep breathing and laughing in such will help the inflamation to go away faster.  Try advil liquid gels (doc recommened them to me to reduce bone/joint inflamation), they work fairly well for moderate pain.  600-800 miligrams 2X a day is what I was told, but ALWAYS consult you doctor before taking medical advice on the internet [;)]

I cracked a few about 4 years back snowboarding, and then when I snapped my clavical like a twig.  I know the feeling.  Best of luck!

It depends on what you consider healed. If you mean "pain free" then it can take a long time.

I broke three of them in a moto-x crash and it hurt to sneeze for years afterwards. But I was back to doing normal stuff without hurting in about a month.

It took me about 10 weeks to get back to normal at work. Took the first 4 weeks off. I have a pretty physically demanding job. I hear you about the pain, it sucks. Can't get into any comfortable position and a good nights sleep is impossible.

I can also attest that broken ribs SUCK.  Stay away from friends, they may make you laugh.

A family member says it gives a new
meaning to pain when you sneeze.

Is it a cracked rib or torn carthlidge?

Both hurt like a SOB and are hard to heal.

If you have to cough or sneeze try pressing a pillow into your abs  to help relieve the pressure.

It really depends on what kind, and how much PAIN meds you can get your hands on!

I broke my ribs in college in a rugby game, and it took me quite a while to become pain free.  There's nothing worse than sneezing or laughing when you have broken ribs.

Generally speaking, ribs will heal within 4-6 weeks, pain can persist for 3-4 months.  I would not restrict deep breathing too much, because expanding the lungs will help prevent pneumonia and or infection.  As well non-steroidal anti inflammatory medications (naproxen/aspirin and ibuprofen) can actually slow bone healing.  I would use Tylenol or a generic for pain.
