Does anybody here actually think the gov would tell us of a impact if they knew for certain ?

Of what magnitude? It was a small one. Didn't look too small.... blew out windows and buckled store fronts from what I'm reading. |

There's like a dozen people world wide who professionally look for shit like that... our close section of the universe is really big and 12 people isn't a lot.

It's a big-assed sky.
They don't exactly advertise where they are It takes a bunch of luck and tedious effort to find one. There isn't a lot of money for budgets for this stuff. Quoted:

I believe the quote from the movie Armageddon was:
" We can only monitor 11% of the sky at any given time, and begging your pardon Sir... But it;s a big fucking sky". |

The five foot one? Coming at us from out of the Sun too from what Cavuto said today. |

There are only a finite number of telescopes looking at an infinite amount of space.

First it's a whole lot o sky and second kinetic energy is a bitch

It's made of porcelain and doesn't show up on xray machines....

If we had a good idea of where its going to be before it hits earth...couldn't we nuke a relatively small rock? |

They knew it was coming, they just didn't feel like telling anybody.

Finding it is one thing. Being able to do something about it once it was found, that is quite another. |

Quoted: Where were all the .Gov agencies, universities, private research labs on this? How the hell did it enter unnoticed? Well, our object collision budget is about a million dollars. It allows us to watch about 3 percent of the sky, and with all due respect, it's a big ass sky. Edit. Dadgummit, beaten. |

You think the government is paying someone to keep track of every two-foot diameter piece of junk in the solar system? |

It was moving at Mach 20+ when it impacted. Can we intercept something at that speed?

Seriously, do you think if they found a rock that could destroy a city or be an extinction level event they would make that publc? No way. |

The only way to protect the earth from a rock is to identify it long before it will impact and do something to change it's course. I don't think a nuclear bomb is going to be the best protection. Much more reliable would be a method of anchoring some sort of drive unit on an asteroid, years before it will impact, and firing the drive at the right time to maximize the Delta-V. |

What, you think the Bureau of Space Dangers is tracking every object in the solar system? Stop watching movies, tune in PBS or Nat Geo or get a subscription to Discover or Popular Science. There's little to no money spent of stuff like this. |
