Other than those who work at home, how far do you have to drive one way?
I'm about 15 minutes away, and have been thinking of moving to a more rural area that could be up to 1 1/2 hour drive one way. I know I could do it at first, but I'm sure it would get old after a year or so. |
I average about 12 minutes each way.
To commute an hour and a half, I would have to be earning substantially more. |
That's way too far to drive daily.
I drive 45 min each way and the number of hours I waste each week adda up fast. |
23 minutes. It's about as long as I want it, at least for awhile. Used to do an hour each way, it drains you after awhile.
40 min, 45 miles. I really wouldnt want it to be any longer. Pretty much all of it is interstate/county highways.
I did a 1:05 (51 miles) for two co-op sessions while finishing my BS. Fuck that never will I do that again. Eats up way to much of your life. My first job after grad school I drove about 30-35 minutes (28 miles) depending on traffic and that was about as long as I want. My current job its about 20 minutes (10 miles). That's about perfect just enough time to get my mind shifted from home to work or back.
Around 30 minutes give or take depending on traffic.
I could not imagine spending three hours a day commuting to work. |
3 miles. Anywhere between 6-10 minutes depending on if I leave in time to beat one of the school buses.
I'm an hour each way for the past 11 years. It wears on you at first. The hardest part is getting stuff done around the house/yard after work while there is still time. |
62 miles each way. Takes about 90 minutes on an average drive.
About 1 hr 20 min on a really good day for a bit under 60 miles. A lot longer if any accident happens. 2 1/2 hours isn't uncommon. It's a pretty typical time for the distant DC suburbs.
Up until recently, my one-way commute was 26 miles and took about 45 minutes. A 90 minute commute would be too much for me.
10 miles away/15 mins. I would go as far as 25 miles if necessary. If I live to retire, I'll be at least 1 hour from town or not move at all.
I cut mine down to 45 minutes. I couldn't be happier. Well I could if it's less than 45 mins
Long commutes really suck. |
TECHNICALLY, it takes 20 minutes to get to work.
With all the wonderful traffic due to construction right now, I plan on 60, usually takes 45. An hour and a half? Yeah no... I watched my father do that for years, driving to Chicago from NW Indiana, and it takes one hell of a toll. |
never had a job closer than 1 hour from home. I am used to it and it does not bother me. I live in the sticks and am never going to move to town, unless it is in an ambulance,,and then it will be temporary. I do stop on the way home and get anything i may need, hardware stores, lumber, gun shops, ect, ect, so all the time and gas is not wasted since I would go to those places anyway to get stuff I need. The drive home unwinds me from work, so that when I get home, I am ready for my real life. It is not all bad, but some friends that have tried it, could not cope with the drive. I also have 345,000 miles on my work car now, so there is an expense to a long drive in tires, gas, maint, and stuff on the vehicle. It adds up, but like I said,,,,I'll never be a townie.
Edit: as far as messing up future plans,,it actually helps with the future for me. I will retire in a few years and will already live where I want to live and retire, instead of moving later. If you are younger, that may not matter yet. |
16 miles down a country road. About 20 minutes.
If I take the harley, 10 minutes |
I live 20 miles away and my commute takes me 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. I live where I want to live and I work for an awesome company so I just accept that it is what it is.

Since the question is stated as how far; it's either 37 or 38 miles; don't exactly remember.
I preach at two churches. One is a 10 minute walk, the other is a 10 minute drive.
I also substitute teach at a local school. It's a 5 minute walk. |
60 from one end of LA past the other end. Could be an hour could be 4. Escaping soon
It used to be 3 minutes give or take, now that I rented my house out and moved across town it's about 20.
about 30 seconds from my bed to my computer and the time it takes to open up this window.that's a lot of work
For 3 months after I graduated I drove over an hour for work. It seemed like all I did was drive and work.
You work 8 hours, sleep 8 hours (not for me but still) that leaves roughly 8 hours of me time. You will grow to resent that drive. My wife drives about that just because of traffic. It sucks. It sucks shit through a straw. eta: The wear and tear on your vehicle turns into another moneyhole. eettaa: forgot to mention, my drive is 10 min. Used to be about 20 min after the beginning. I've really gotten spoiled. 3 hrs out of your day is too long and it costs too much. When gas prices skyrocketed the long drivers felt it. |
For now.. 60mi one way. Sucks huge. Can not wait for it to end. 50-90 minutes. Averaging lately around 70 minutes.
Hate it |
10sec on non travel weeks, I just walk from the bedroom to the office.
6-8hr on travel weeks, drive to airport, security, 4hrs in the plane, get a rental, drive to the facility. |
When I teach CCW classes, 16 miles one way.
When I'm doing carbine and rifle instruction, 45 miles one way. |

Nope. 1 hour would be my max, with under 20 minutes being what I would like for long term if I had to commute for work. FerFAL |

1 mile on the dot to the plant. Sometimes I have to travel for my job so I have to go all the way another 300 yards past the plant to the airfield, park my truck in the heated hanger, and get right on the company plane and take off. Private flying is rough
Everything else around home is nice and close too. 1 block to the grocery store, 1 block to the post office, 2 blocks to the bar, 3 blocks to the restaurant/bowling alley. Small town life FTW |
47 miles one way. My TDI burns 2 gallons for the round trip, call it: $6.50 per day.

View Quote about 33 miles one way, takes about 60-70 minutes...most of it is scenic/rural in nature which is better than a traffic jammed commute. Yeah, you could say it messes with my future plans. Once I'm home during the week thats it for me, Im done. Not getting back in the car unless it's for a dire reason. Weekends are hit or miss. If I am not too fried from the previous weeks work and drive I will sometimes head out someplace, but in general I do end up not wanting to get back in the car. One the plus side I've got 5 wooded acres here, it's quiet, and I have a small range out back, so it's not all bad |
I'm 2.3 miles and 5 minutes away from the office. No way I would give that up.
I drove 100 miles a day for work for years. It sucks. I moved close to work and not there seems to be more hours in the day...
15 minutes to the shop. Then 10 minutes to 5 hours to the jobsite. I get paid from the second I turn my car on to when I turn it off at night so it doesn't really bother me. I drive 80-100k a year.
Once upon a time, no shit, my commute was 30m/35mi each way. It was occasionally inconvenient but it's also nice to ramp up into your day, be alone with your thoughts and listen to talk radio. In reverse, heading home was good too, gave me a chance to unwind a little bit before I hit the chaos of my front door.
I am about 82ish miles from my house to the parking lot at work. Takes about an hour and twenty in the AM and a few minutes longer in the PM.
I live in a very rural work and commute 12 miles to work. I brave one traffic light each direction.
I drive about an hour. Having a shorter commute would be nice, but that involves one of two choices.
1. Leave a stable DoD job that I enjoy, 2. Move to NJ. I don't plan on doing either of those anytime soon and will stick with my commute. |
14 miles and it take me about 21 minutes. I actually like it. It's easy highway/interstate driving. Let's me prepare for the day and after work I get a little "me" time to just unwind.
55 miles each way, 60 to 70 mins is normal each way.
I really don't mind the morning commute but if it was shorter I could work out in the AM, as it is there is no way to make that happen. The afternoon I am always irritated at because I am ready to get home. For the most part it just becomes part of your work day and you get used to it. I would have a hard time with anything longer though especially with the hours I work (7:30 to 5 or 6 most days) One saving grace for me is a company vehicle, their gas and wear and tear likely saves me $10k plus a year over driving my own. |
3/4 mile, country road no real traffic, no stops! Even ride the Four-wheeler quite often .
