How do you spell the name of the Libyan leader?

Arabic language does not translate well into the Roman alphabet. That's why there are so many variations of spelling of the same word: Nobody can agree as to what is exactly right.

NTM

"al Qaeda" is the most common spelling.  Like Osama / Usama.  Just phonetic approximations like Chinese--Peking vs Beijing.

When translating Arabic, when sounded as a K, the Q is generally not followed by a U.

(QU is pronounced like "cue" or "coo".)

NBC uses Al-Qaida. CNN seems to use Al-Queda.

I choose the NBC version for my own uses.

However, I usually just tend to call them filthy pieces of shit. That seems the most accurate description among the choices.
