you have to color it "clear"  there should be an option in your image editor.

Colored the background grey.

take a screenshot, then open it up in photoshop. Use the eyedropper tool to get the correct color. Open up the smiley, and commence photoshop magic.

Arg.. gimp is too stupid to have a color of transparent.
