I have a Kimber compact custom and I am pulling my hair out trying to remove the guide rod and barrel from the slide.  I have never owned a 1911 type with a 1 piece guide rod and a conical barrel.

-Pull back slide, engage slide stop.
-Guide rod has a hole where you will insert the removable tool.
-Release slide stop
-Remove slide stop and take off the slide and barrel assembly
-you can easily figure it out from here on.

hope this help

1.  Lock the slide to the rear.
2.  There is a little hole in the guide rod, bend a paper clip to fit inside that hole but not go through it.
3.  Bend the end of the paper clip to parallel to the guide rod.
4.  Let the slide slowly forward to rest against the paper clip.
5.  Remove the slide stop.
6.  Pull slide forward off frame.

All right.
Thanks Guard and Riddler.
My next post: How do I get the barrel and guide rod back in?  No, I should be able to figure it out.
