How do I accurately check to see if my dog is running a fever?

She seems a little more lazy than normal since eating all the chocolate chip cookies the other day

Just want to be cautious

I'm not sure if I have a butt thermometer

Dog may or may not follow you around for a few days.

You have to stick your finger in your butt first to compare... Otherwise you have nothing to compare to. I guess you could stick your finger in your butt AFTER you stick your finger in your dogs butt, but that's just gross.

Dags run a couple degrees hotter than us anyway.
That is why they can eat shit, drink out of puddles, etc. Basically, they always have a fever, cooking all the bad stuff out.
Don't worry about dog, he can curl up in the corner, and not eat for days. Part of the canine healing process.

Regular bowel movements, gums still pink?

Maybe she is just coming down off the chocolate high.

It will probably make things easier if you get some peanut butter involved.

I checked with the ear thermometer and got 100.8
Link Posted: 1/17/2015 10:10:23 PM EST

Some of you guys are close. You have to put one finger in your butt and one in the dogs butt at the same time to compare. Preferably one finger from each hand, it's easier that way.

101-102.5 is normal dog range. Rectal thermometer is required.

Second this, very normal.

You have to tongue the anus.....your finger lacks the receptors to adequately tell the 3 or 4 degree difference in temperature to correctly diagnose a fever

You can just have the tail lay across your forehead while probing with your tongue

A thermometer is a thermometer is a thermometer... Rectal or oral is going to read the same temp. They may taste different but they read the same...

Stick your nose in the dags butt. That's why dags do that to each other, complimentary fever check.

Finger up the butt, if it feels warm you have your answer.
Make sure you wash finger before eating if you care.

This is true. Should have said rectal reading required for most accurate temp with dog. Rectals are marked as such so you don't mix them up with the oral one. Yikes!

Makes me think about my dog at the vet. He's very tolerant of being handled, but when tempurature is taken he gets a funny look on his face.
