Playing a guitar seems a lot harder than shooting.

I don't want to learn how to play the guitar. I just want to wake up one morning knowing how to play the guitar.
Because I don't.........Practice, practice, practice. Muscle memory. Practice. .....as much as I should to achieve a level of playing "well", but I like it
Don't put much time into it, can't read sheet music. I know some chords and am happy to strum away knowing I'll never be a guitar god.
It's all about keeping and maintaining a rhythm much like the drums. Momentum is your friend not your foe.
I'm pretty sure they just don't make them for right handed musicians
Cuz I mangled two of mah finger tips on mah frettin' hand.
Chords are a bitch. |
I can't play a guitar at all.
At near 60 and with arthritis in both hands...yeah, no lessons for me. |
I can't mentally associate musical notes with finger/hand positions. I can play short tunes by memory but I cannot put my fingers in a position and know the sound that'll be produced before I play the note.

Is this a quote from a movie? Guitar is much easier than shooting.

15 years ago, I wasn't a gun owner, but I was performing locally for $50/hr as a solo act.
Playing 4 or 5 nights a month made me a lot of money that eventually turned into guns. I've asked my family to kindly kick me in the rear to get out performing again this year. I think I've played maybe out 5 times since 2008. |

My left hand is kind of spastic (getting better), so, it's been two years since I've been able to play. Too bad, since I had just put together my best sounding strat clone. Triple minihumbuckers, kingswood fretboard, paduok neck, fret wire specified (forgot the dimensions) schaller hardware, and for this guitar, I chose a standard light weight alder body.
I have small hands and can't get my fingers everywhere they need to be. Even using my right hand to put each finger in the right place I couldn't do it.
I'll stick to shooting. |
As with anything else, the secret is simply practicing. The more I practiced, the luckier I was at hitting the right notes and chords.

I never had much, but wish I did. Got lots of cool gear though. |

I have absolutely no skill. I started taking lessons in high school. Then I took them again a few years after being out. I kept having this pipe dream that I'd actually learn. It never happened. I should sell the guitars but I like them. Maybe my son will have the skill I never did.

I can play some Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel tunes but otherwise I suck at any other style. I do like to play classical guitar too.

I used to play a lot.
I haven't practiced seriously in about 10 years, maybe more. I've still got some chops though |
I've had guitars and beat the hell out of them for more than 40 years and I still suck.
I don't make any serious effort to learn, it's just a way to unwind my brain; strumming a six-string. In my view, there are two types of guitar players, Mechanics, who learn it as a skill, and devote countless hours practicing and learning, and Natural Talents, people who just hear the music in their head and instinctively can reproduce it on an instrument, and can hone it by devoting countless hours to practice and learning. I am neither. But I have met some natural talents. One of my 13 yo daughters friends, who is a Nationally rated gymnast, walked over to her piano and played "Frozen" out of her head, a song my daughter was struggling with after 3 years of piano. Tracy had Zero lessons, but she could "Hear" the song, and had worked it out on her key board that she plays around with at home. She's prodigy at everything she tries. Natural Talent. I have a close friend who is the same way with almost any musical instrument. Crazy talented. |

Oh, but I do play guitar; very, very well. I practice until I'm bored numb with it. Then I practice some more.

I can't play the guitar or shoot very well, but I have doing 'em, so the wife will always be annoyed about something...
I play better now at 45 than I did at 19 but I'm a slower learner than I was then. When I was a kid I was better at picking up things now I can still do it but it takes me longer. Not physically but the mental part.
As for my skill level.. Im a rhythm guitarist, to me the groove is more important than anything. I can play some leads but for some reason it isn't as interesting. |

Because I have absolutely zero rhythm. None. View Quote You're not alone. Going into the 5th grade mom asked "What instrument do you want to play in band next year?" "I don't think I'll take band." "What instrument are you going to play?" I can say that I have failed at learning to play a trombone, a piano and finally a guitar. It just ain't in me. |
One of those things I wanted to learn, just never got around to it. I can make some pretty neat screeching noises though
One has to be willing, and able to make the investment of time spent practicing.
I'm stuck on chords, and cannot lead for crap. I have gotten better with the things I practice, but it's been painfully slow. Frustrating at times. |

There are people who can play chords on a guitar, and people who can PLAY a guitar. There is a world of difference between the two. Most people can just play a few chords.
I can't play at all. |
