My 17 year-old sister has one of those nifty Xanga blog things. Her site has a little chat box on the right hand side, where you can post comments anonymously.

The other day she received a threat. Anonymous coward said "i swear im gonna fucking kick your ass. and dont worry any "damage" done to your face cyndie, will be a grate improvement."

I don't know whether to believe it or not, but she's pretty disturbed by it. I wanna find out who this fucker is - regardless of whether or not he/she is serious, I don't take that kind of bullshit from anybody.

With this chat thing, if you click on the name of the person who posted ("Anonymous" in this case) it'll show 3/4 of the IP address. I get 69.230.183.* when I do this.

To all you computer gurus: Is there any way to find the full IP address? Can I use it to find out who this is? Even if this guy wasn't serious, I wanna find out who it is.

eta: vigilante justice doesn't do much in today's society. If it disturbs you guys that much, tell her to quit the crap with AIM, copy the stuff on paper and file a police report. Not much else to do, of course you can hunt the person down with IP info, but I'm not aiding someone with that info.

contact Xanga and have the comment removed.  and have the IP address possibly banned from the site.  but no you your self won't be able to find his OR her actual IP address.  it is up to Xanga to keep track of that.

You will need to have them co-ordinate with the xanga(or whatever) site.  That is if they even give a rats ass.

1) Why are you reading your 17-year-old sister's blog traffic?
2) If your 17-year-old sister doesn't like getting creepy chat traffic on her blog, maybe (and I know this is a major existential stretch) just maybe, she shouldn't have a blog.

That subnet is used by DSL customers of pacbell.net in or near Irvine, CA.

I had played with teh Blog format on one of my websites and I stopped because you have no control over who posts or any real way to lock them out...  I know your sister can't afford an entire website and hosting that comes with it so she is kind of stuck...

either you expect an idiot every know and then.... or you shut down the site.

I talked to my sister and she does know somebody who recently moved to a city near Irvine (Lake Forest, if you californians are curious.) We're going to look into the possibility of it being that person.
