Have you ever sold a car, and years later wondered what it was up to?

I had a 1996 Camaro Z-28, VIN#2G1FP22P6T2139475 and am wondering where it is and if it is still on the road (or wrapped around a telephone pole).  I sold it in April, 2000.  Does anybody know how to do a title search to see if/where a vehicle is?  I've heard that state law prevents this information from getting out to prevent stalking, but you can order a carfax report for like $20 that will tell you the last time it was registered or renewed.  It there a free way to get this info, preferably on the internet?  That car was such a big part of my life, I want to know if it is someone's baby, or rusting in a junkyard.  Thanks
