Hussein Farrah Aidid enlisted in the Marines in 1987 and became a U.S. citizen four years later because it was a prerequisite to becoming an officer. His commanders helped him rush through the swearing-in before he shipped out to Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he was on Gulf War alert for months.

Not really a Somali warlord if you've been exiled to Ethiopia.

From what I understand, his dad was a warlord and he wasn't...  He was serving in the Marines while we were hunting his dad.

Edit:  Okay, so after reading Wikipedia (I know)...  He took over for his dad after his fathers death...  He's a warlord

I'm pretty ok with this.

people have been joining the military (U.S. and otherwise) to gain valuable experience which they can take home and use for their own causes. The Irish joined the U.S. military hoping to gain experience and throw off the yoke of British tyranny... and the year was approximately 1861

edit: just to clarify, i dont know if thats why this particular individual joined the military, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Are you basing that opinion solely on the fact that he is a Somali warlord?

The same can be said of Gen. Mattis. Doesn't necessarily mean much.

The US at least tries to stop that from happening. I doubt Somali warlords care anywhere near as much.

I'm fairly confident a platoon of Marines fromb SOI could take over a small country.

yes, there certainly was conscription, but Im thinking of other examples where they actually came to America for combat experience. I think the rebellion in the 1790s had participants with such experience, but its been a while since ive read about this topic.

I will i could be more detailed, but hopefully someone with more knowledge will come around.

It's Somalia, I'm ok with it.

My preference is for warlords that speak English fluently.

I spoke with East Africa FAO who made a pretty convincing legal argument that in 1991 the faction that became the Somali National Alliance had the best claim to be the legitimate government of Somalia.
