Its Friday night and I'm staying home and I'm bored.  The weekend looks dismal because no gun shows within a driveable distance.  Wife wants me to do work around the house all this weekend.  Thought I would try to break the boredom by asking about the number of AR mags everyone has.  I have 124 of them:

50 new or almost new GI
20 90%+ GI
10 Orlites
10 Thermolds
10 Good fitting steel
10 50%+ GI
10  5% GI Colts
3 Useable  GI range mags

Only 1 Colt 20 rd

What about ya'll?  Am I deficient in this area or am I a leader of the pack?  (ever since my girlfriend Susie L. told me how deficient I was in another important area back in 1965 I worried about things like that)

As a general rule of thumb - I like to have at least a dozen mags per rifle mixed 20's and 30's. Since FAL, AK47 and 74 mags are much cheaper I'd say at least 20 or so.

The exception to this is my HK93 mags, ranging from $55 to $75 a piece - all I can afford to keep on hand is about 6 or so.

While were on the subject, can anyone recommend a trustworthy source for 20 rnd mags?

I only have 14 for my one AR.  You really cant have to many mags.

AL - probably the most trustworthy folks are here on this board - check the magazines for sale section.

I have bought and sold on this board and never had a bad deal. Good thing about this board is that most people selling, check other 'going prices' - so in effect, the prices are kept fair.

Considering I'm really into long range and bench rest, I use the 8 rounders more than anything else, but keep 6 perfect 20rnd colts in the wait.  Home defense is taken care of by 2 colt 30rnders fully loaded.  Ammo is on stripper clips, so what's the need to carry around all those mags?  I'm expecting a sunset, but still just ordered 5 brand new orlites for $50, just for the hell of it.

I like at least 10 30's and 5 20's per rifle. So far I'm ok. I've got 4 AR's and about 60 30 round mags and about 40 20 rounders.

I shoot high power rifle. I have 9 20's that get used every match. I have one shortie for space gun offhand. I have about 7 more 20's and probably 6 or 7 30's, for rattle battle and civil defense.
Colts? Who cares? As long as the mags are mil-spec that's good enough for me. I think these inflated Colt prices are something gunshow dealers invented... The only mags I stay away from are the new steel ones. They even look junky.

A very timely question !

I've recently moved and have been going through boxes trying to separate mags.

Piled up on the desk now are about 51.  (Counting three collector ArmaLite-Colts' 20-round mags)

I'm a member of AR-15.com so I feel obligated to share info but in this case only once.

The 'BEST' 30-round and 40-round mags were the ones by ArmaLite for the AR-18 and AR-180.  ArmaLite's 20-round mag was made strictly for the AR-18/AR-180 however their 30-round and -40-round mags were factory made for both the AR-18/180 and the AR-15/M16.
The base plate on these 30's and 40's is marked "Sterling."

Well, you remember that 'time machine' that was being discussed on that other thread .... you'd have to start there.

Or wait around to see if the AWB sunsets in Sept. 2004!

I once bought 40 contract GI mags (NIW) at the Astrohall Gun Show in Houston for $2.50 each!

Those days are, I fear, gone forever!

Meanwhile, in a van parked somewhere in Oklahoma...

Fed1: 'Hey, Mike, were you able to grab that guy's ISP?'

Fed2: 'Yes, Joe, got it loud and clear!'

Fed1: 'Should I send the boys in now?'

FedBase: 'Negative, Joe. We need to monitor him a bit longer to see if he leads us to Mr. Big, you know that Hun fellow in Texas.'

Fed1: 'Roger that! Fed1 out.'

Lord, 5subslr5, there's snow on that van? You'd better go check them boys out!

They may have frozen to death in that unheated van.

That's one way you can tell when you're being checked out - the suspect van will be the only one on the street without snow on it!

I still have almost 900 30s and 20s left over from when I had my FFL. Of course back in those days you could buy them by the truckload for about $4 to $6 each. The good old days!

Once upon a time, when I still had my Green Label Colt 6600 HBAR, I had a 20mm ammo can with 100-110 USGI 30-rounders. ALL were in 95% condition or better.

I parted with the HBAR in a trade for a HK 91. I GAVE 40 of the mags to a buddy. The rest I sold for $10 apiece to a dealer at a gun show. I gave the money to my wife 'cause she was still pissed about the HK 91 deal.

Life REALLY sucks sometimes...

Umm, interesting, you have sex once for each mag that you have?

Lets see, I have 121 mags and I'm been married to a school teacher from the midwest for 30 years.  That means I have 89 more chances for sex???

I agree that the "best" 40 round mags are the Sterling made AR18/AR15 mags BUT Sterling also made curved 20 rounders that fit and function well in both AR18/AR15 rifles.  As the 30s and 40s the 20s are also marked "Sterling" made in England.

I'm up to 95 USGI mags. 69 30 rounders, 26 20 rounders. I figure I'll stop with the USGI mags at 100 total. Now I'm just getting started with the Thermolds. Probably add another Beta-C to the mix as well. Also need to beef up the 7.62x39 AR mag collection.
