I'm fairly certain the first clip and the second clip don't go together. Still, I wonder what actually happened to the guy in the Jeep.

Or use a chain rated for what you’re doing and not some random bullshit you got at Lowe’s

I watched it.

Two jeep/offroad vehicles are in the mud
Chain/rope  linking them together.

Guy in jeep is stuck   REAL deep in the mud

Other vehicle builds up some major speed and the chain snaps.
Part of it whips back and  smashes through the windshield of the stuck vehicle.
Rips the guys entire lower jaw off.

There's the reason you don't use chains anymore. Worst case open the hood and lean it against the windshield as a shield. But, looks third world...so...third world gonna third world.

I had to winch out a buddy one time, I was using steel winch line at the time.. this was on a trail in homestead FL. Well, we started winching and this guy found a huge piece of carpet and threw it on it. Ofcourse the winch line broke and I believe that piece of carpet saved us both.. I only use synthetic winch line after that. Only retards bring chains to pull people out with..

You're right, he didn't pull him out of the mud.  Jeep's still stuck.

Truck pulling a truck out of the mud. Chain snaps and goes in windshield, driver side. Driver will not be talking any more shit, about anything.

Chains have uses.  Towing and retrieval aren't among them.

Seriously, even a cheapo strap from Home Depot will get you through the winter, just don't push them real hard.  Buy quality shackles and store them inside the vehicle.

But I doubt those two videos go together.

I know this, ive only ever used straps. Hence the question would a blanket even slow down the weight of a steel chain ?

If you must use chain/cable, use chain/cable rated for the task! Slowly pull up slack and tension, never, ever jerk them.
I have pulled a shit ton of tractors with chains, one even out of a pond (long story). I have even towed a semi up an ice covered hill, redlining at 1.2 MPH.
You can do it, you just have to always know you you do not ever snatch that chain, and use enough chain for the job.

Yup first clip in the US, 2nd looks like some foreign shit hole hospital (if its even real). If that happened in the woods, he would have died or at least be in shock from blood loss by the time they got him out.

I'm actually glad I saw this, in a way.

I've learned a lot from other's bad decisions.

ETA: Even it is two different videos, the Jeep vid was stupid. I've towed, and been towed, out of sticky situations. I try to stay way the fuck away, even if I think I know exactly what I'm doing.

For you 4x4 guys that has never heard of it, look up Amsteel rope from Samson. 1/2" Amsteel has an avg strength of 34,000 pounds. 1" Amsteel avg strength is 109,000 pounds. The stuff is incredibly strong. Most the rigging on sail boats is Amsteel.

It's hollow braided dyneema that you can easily splice and make looped ends.

The second video I have seen before and it's a thief/robber in a Country south of the border that I think got shot in the face.   That is why it seems nobody is helping him because even the staff don't give a shit about low lifes.   I think I read there is a law to keep people from helping them.

Saw the results of something similar once, though I opted for the "from a distance" view. A guy was picking up a trailer with a winch type truck. Problem was, one of the pins on the roller came out and the sag left a couple inches of frame above the roller. Well the trailer caught the frame and he kept winching. The trailer had a 2 in cold rolled steel bar that the winch hook was attached to. When it let loose, it went through the back window of the truck and caught the guy in the jaw. He lived but I'm sure he wasn't the same after that. I was about 17 at the time and one of the guys working at the tire shop I was working at came running in screaming at the boss. When he ran back outside I saw the dude slumped over the wheel doing the kicking chicken. I let the big boys handle it.

looking at the longer video...they had straps...they were tied to the chain

and I cant decide if the strap is what broke, or if the knot that had it and the chain tied in let go.

[#45]
You don't use tow chain for snatch straps, but the videos are not of the same person, somebody is setting up a way worse situation than actually happened, if I have to try and snatch someone out, I use a 4" inch wide strap that is designed and rated to do that type of work..  I also have a 12,500 pound winch on the back of my truck rated to do recovery like that, it is also set up with attachment D rings so I can put my snatch block and double the pulling ability of the winch.

That video is just some dumbshit guys sitting around getting drunk on beer and decided to see if they could impress the world!

I’ve always used nylon tow straps with sewn eyes (no metal hooks).

Not only are they “softer” on the pull since they stretch, they don’t have the mass/momentum to do as much damage should it snap.

Obviously they can still be dangerous if they snap, so you have to stay out of the line of pull, outside the radius of the strap, behind cover, etc.

The guy in the Jeep had the strap attached almost directly in front of him/in the line of pull.

Wire rope will break under tension and kill folks who are nearby.

We had a guy killed by a wire rope that broke when he was using a winch on a large boat to retrieve some heavy underwater stuff.

He had a protective steel cage to get in next to the winch, but he opted to not use it.
